TWU SPARTANS (1) AT THE WESTMONT COLLEGE WARRIORS (0)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TESAN SCORES LATE TO LIFT SPARTANS
SANTA BARBARA, Calf. – Trinity Western University rookie forward Alicia Tesan (Vancouver) spoiled Westmont College’s home opener Thursday afternoon as she scored in the 85th minute to lift the Spartans women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over the Warriors on a hot sunny day at Westmont’s Lovik Field in Santa Barbara, Calf.
The first half was even in total chances with each team getting three shots towards their opponents net, but the second half saw Trinity Western take more control as they outshot Westmont five to two.
“It was a very competitive match and I was pleased with way Westmont played and that we did a good job of absorbing their pressure in the first half. At half time I challenged our players to show up in the second half and go one step better and other then the first five minutes, where we were a little sluggish, we outplayed them in the final 40 minutes,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “All credit to Westmont. They are a very good team and I’m pleased that we could have an excellent result in a very competitive game against a team that we respect immensely.”
The game winner came after the Spartans Melissa Mobilio (Coquitlam, B.C.) stripped the ball in the midfield and passed it to Rebecca Ferguson (Calgary). Ferguson dribbled down the field before attempting to advance the ball forward to Tesan. Her pass, however, was intercepted by Westmont's Samantha Kleen. Kleen was unable to clear the ball as it hit Daniela Gerig (Langley, B.C.) in the face and ricocheted back to Tesan who was now one-on-one with Westmont goalkeeper Roxanne Love. Tesan took one touch into the box and then slotted the ball from the left to the far post to give the Spartans the lead.
Spartans keeper Kristen Funk (Calgary) made one save to preserve the shutout win and improve the Spartans to 2-0 in preseason. The Warriors, 0-1, Roxanne Love made three saves in the loss.
The Spartans Tesan and Daniela Gerig led TWU with two shots each, while Aolani Rueff and Melanie Greene each recorded two shots for Westmont. Rueff recorded the lone shot on net for the Warriors. TWU also had the edge in corner kicks, 6-0, over Westmont.
The Spartans will now travel to the University of the Redlands for a match on Aug. 30.
Trinity Western opens their Canada West conference play with three straight road games. They play Saskatchewan on Sept. 12, Alberta on Sept. 13 and British Columbia on Sept. 19. TWU’s home opener will be on Sept. 26 against British Columbia.
Since entering the CIS in 2002 the Spartans women's soccer program has rapidly become one of the premier programs in the CIS. They have won two national championships, in 2008 and 2004, and two Canada West championships, in 2006 and 2004, and have been in the national championship three of the last five years where they have accumulated a 7-1-1 record.
