WOMEN’S SOCCER (CANADA WEST)
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2009
TWU SPARTANS (3) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (2)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS PICK UP FROM 2008 AS WRIGHT SCORES WINNER
SASKATOON - Reigning Canada West Player of the Year Nikki Wright (Cloverdale, B.C.) picked up where she left off from 2008 as she scored the game winner midway through the second half to lead the Spartans to a 3-2 win in their opening match of the Canada West season on a windy Saturday afternoon in Saskatoon.
Wright, the 2008 Canada West goal scoring leader, got her first of the season when she took the ball off of her chest, split the Huskies’ defenders to go in alone on the Saskatchewan net: where she slotted the ball high to give Trinity Western the opening match win.
“Saskatchewan is always a tough place to play and we started poorly and were sluggish moving around the park, which gave Saskatchewan the advantage early on,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “But all credit to Saskatchewan they came out strong and hungry and had players who gave us problems.”
The Huskies opened the scoring in the 18th minute when they scored an own goal after a cross went off of a TWU defender and into the Spartans net to give Saskatchewan an early 1-0 lead.
The Spartans got the equalizer on a penalty kick by Melissa Mobilio (Coquitlam, B.C.) in the 33rd minute. The PK came after TWU forward Daniela Gerig (Langley, B.C.) was pulled down in the box by Saskatchewan keeper Marissa Wilford. Wilford had no choice as Gerig was past her defenders and in alone on the goal with an advantage on the keeper.
Seven minutes later TWU rookie forward Alicia Tesan (Vancouver) got her first Canada West goal of her career. Tesan scored after she won the ball from 30 yards out, made a move past the Huskies defenders and hammered the ball into the back of the Saskatchewan net to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead in the 40th minute.
“Alicia made a huge difference for us today. She was quality all over the park, making strong runs and disrupting Saskatchewan’s play all game long,” commented Roxburgh.
The Huskies got the tying goal in the final seconds of the first half. Saskatchewan’s Elizabeth Hudon converted a pass from Jamie LeMay to make the score 2-2 at the break.
In the second half the Spartans where heading into the 21 km/hr wind. TWU still had their chances, but were unable to convert until the 68th minute.
TWU’s Kristen Funk (Calgary) made four saves to earn the win, while Wilford made four saves in the Huskies loss.
The Spartans will now get on a bus and head to Edmonton to take on the Pandas tomorrow afternoon. Game time at the UofA is set for 12 p.m.
Match Notes: TWU outshot Saskatchewan 12-7 overall and had a five to two edge in corner kicks…the Spartans Daniela Gerig led all players with five total shots…the Spartans are now 14-0-1 lifetime against the Huskies…
