TWU SPARTANS (3) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA THUNDERBIRDS (1)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TESAN SCORES TWICE TO GIVE TWU HISTORIC WIN
VANCOUVER – Trinity Western University rookie forward Alicia Tesan (Vancouver) scored twice to give the Spartans an historic come-from-behind victory over the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds Saturday night in Vancouver. The Spartan victory marks the first time that TWU has ever beaten the Thunderbirds on their home field. The Spartans are now 1-7-2 at UBC and 5-12-5 overall against the Thunderbirds since joining Canada West in 2001.
The win keeps the No. 1 Spartans perfect at 3-0-0, while the loss is the first of the year for the 1-1-1 Thunderbirds.
“I’m so pleased with how well we responded after they scored. We really came to life,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “After that we really had a convincing second half in many ways and played very well defensively. They are a very good team and we respect them immensely and in the end we came away with an important victory.”
After a fast-paced first half settled nothing between the two sides, rookie forward Rachel Sawer opened the scoring for UBC in the 53rd minute. Jessica Briker created the chance by beating a defender at midfield before playing an excellent through-ball for Janine Frazao down the right wing. Frazao’s low cross found Sawer in space at the edge of the six yard box, and she slotted it home to give the home side the lead.
TWU forward Rebecca Ferguson (Calgary) set up the Spartans first goal in the 65th minute. Ferguson got behind the left back of the Thunderbirds and swung a perfect ball in for Tesan. The 5’4” forward knocked in a beautiful header to finish at the far post and tie the match at 1-1.
Not long after Tesan tied the game at one, Daniela Gerig (Fort Langley, B.C.) got the winner for the Spartans in the 77th minute with a powerful strike from 25 yards out that hugged the near post as it sailed past a diving Jaclyn Dunnet.
The two Spartan forwards hooked up for an insurance marker on a counter attack in the 86th minute, as Gerig curled a long pass into the box right onto the head of Tesan, who directed it home to seal the win for Trinity Western.
Kristen Funk (Calgary) picked up the win for the Spartans, allowing just one goal on five shots, while Dunnett made six saves in a losing effort for UBC.
The Spartans and Thunderbirds will match up again next week when UBC will travel to Langley, B.C. to take on TWU on their own turf. Game time on Sept. 26 is set for 5 p.m.
Match Notes: Last season the two teams were 1-1-1, UBC won 1-0 at UBC, they tied 1-1 in Langley and the Spartans won 2-1 in PK’s at the CW final four in Victoria…
