NO. 1 TWU SPARTANS (1) VS THE NO. 4 UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA VIKES (2)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FLOCK SCORES TWICE TO DROP SPARTANS
LANGLEY, British Columbia – Canada West leading scorer Kendra Flock (Calgary) scored twice in the second half to give the No. 4 University of Victoria Vikes a 2-1 come from behind victory over the No. 1 Trinity Western University Spartans Friday night at TWU’s Langley, B.C. campus. The loss is the first blemish of the season for the Spartans as they fall to 6-1-0, while the win moves the Vikes to 6-1-1.
The match was what you would expect when two of the top teams in the nation, who have a strong tradition, match-up in a meaningful contest. Both teams put pressure on the other teams back line and keepers and both teams had strong moments of quality possession. But it was Flock’s few moments of success and Victoria’s bending but not breaking in the final minutes that gave the defending Canada West champion Vikes the victory over the defending CIS champion Spartans.
Mellisa Mobilio (Coquitlam, B.C.) opened the scoring off of a nice pass and a hard sprint through the Vikes back line. TWU forward Alicia Tesan (Vancouver) hit Mobilio at the centre of the park at full stride. Mobilio then weaved her way through Victoria’s defenders to go in alone on the Vikes net. Victoria keeper Stephanie Parker (Chemainus, B.C.) came charging out to challenge the TWU midfielder, but was unable to get a piece of the ball as Mobilio put the ball into the back of the Vikes net to give TWU the 1-0 lead.
TWU had the edge in shots in the first half at five to two, but Victoria held the edge in corner kicks at six to one.
The two teams were evenly matched to start the second half. But the tide turned towards Victoria midway through the final frame.
Flock tied the match at 1-1, 12 minutes into the second frame. Nellanna Kurylo (Victoria) picked up the ball just over half on the right side of the field. She sent a deep cross to the far side of the TWU penalty area where Flock went high to head the ball over the top of the outstretched hands of a diving Veronika Rogina (Langley, B.C.) and into the back of the Spartans net.
Flock was at it again in the 69th minute. In a seemingly innocent play Flock picked up a ball outside the penalty area on the left hand side of the field. Flock looped a ball from 30 yards out that curled neatly under the TWU cross bar to give Victoria the 2-1 lead.
Down a goal the Spartans came back hard and had a number of strong runs into the Vikes end of the field. In the 80th minute it looked like TWU forward Daniela Gerig (Langley, B.C.) had tied the match after she went past Parker, tight to the right, and hit the ball toward the open net. But the Vikes Frankee Bencher (Kamloops, B.C.) came hard from the left and cleared the ball off of the line after just before it could cross the line and even up the match.
The Spartans continued to pressure through the remainder of the half but were unable to get the equalizer.
TWU’s Rogina made two saves in the loss, while Victoria’s Parker made four saves to record the win.
Next up for the Spartans is the University of the Fraser Valley. Game time Saturday night at TWU is set for 5 p.m. Next up for the Vikes is at the University of British Columbia.
Match Notes: TWU outshot Victoria 10 to six, while the Vikes had the edge in corner kicks six to four…Tonight’s match was broadcast live on Spartan TV with full audio and video. Live stats were also available on gospartans.ca…
