WRIGHT FOR TWO AS TWU WINS

LANGLEY, British Columbia – After a five game drought Trinity Western forward Nikki Wright (Cloverdale, B.C.) hit for two markers to lead the No. 1 Spartans to a 2-0 victory over the University of the Fraser Valley Saturday night at TWU’s Langley, B.C. campus. The win moves the Spartans to 7-1-0 and back into first place in Canada West, while the loss drops the Cascades to 4-3-2 and fifth place in CW.

Wright opened the scoring in the 39th minute to put Trinity Western up 1-0. The goal came after the Spartans had sustained pressure on the Cascades. TWU got the ball into the UFV penalty area, and after a bit of a scramble, midfielder Melissa Mobilio (Coquitlam, B.C.) got the ball to Wright in the centre of the box. Wright moved to her right and sent a low hard shot past the Cascades Chantelle Biagioni (Pitt Meadows, B.C.) and into the lower left corner for her third goal of the season.

The one goal lead stood up at the half, with TWU also holding an edge in shots, seven to four and corners one to none.

The Spartans and Cascades exchanged chances in the second half, with both keepers making three saves.

The second year forward got the insurance goal to put TWU up 2-0 in the 83rd minute with a header into top left corner of the UFV net.  Spartan midfielder Rebecca Ferguson (Calgary) set up Wright for her fourth goal of the season. Ferguson hit a cross that traveled across the box to find Wright open on the left side of the six yard box.

TWU finished the match outshooting UFV 15 to nine and have a two to nil edge in corner kicks.

TWU keeper Kristen Funk (Calgary) made six saves to earn her fifth win of the season, while Biagioni made seven saves in the loss.

The Spartans continue their home stand next week when they host the University of Calgary on Fri., Oct. 16 and the University of Lethbridge on Sat. Oct. 17. Game time on both nights is set for 5 p.m.

Match Notes: Wright was named player of the game for TWU, while Lyndsay Munro (Maple Ridge, B.C.) was named player of the game for UFV…Tonight’s result was Funk’s third shutout of the Canada West season…Earlier tonight Victoria and UBC tied 0-0.
