NO. 2 TWU SPARTANS (3) VS THE UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (0)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS JUMP OUT EARLY AND OFTEN
-set program record for consecutive shutouts with five
LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western forward Nikki Wright (Cloverdale, B.C.) picked up where she left off Friday night. The second year forward scored two more goals to lead the No. 2 Spartans to a 3-0 victory over the visiting University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night at TWU’s Langley, B.C. campus. The win moves the Spartans to 11-1-0, while the loss drops the Huskies to 4-7-1.
The Spartans dominated the early going and controlled the play for much of the match as TWU outshot Saskatchewan 19-5. The Spartans have now won five straight in which Wright has scored seven goals. She leads Canada West with five game winning goals.
Wright got going early as she put the Spartans on the score sheet just over a minute into the contest. Natalie Boyd (Surrey, B.C.) found Wright alone in the middle of the Saskatchewan box. Wright received the pass took a touch and hammered the ball past Saskatchewan keeper Marissa Wilford (Winnipeg) to put TWU up 1-0.
The speedy forward got her second of the match and her ninth of the season 13 minutes later. Natalie Boyd once again set up the goal, this time on a corner. Boyd’s corner kick got past a number of Huskies’ defenders to find Wright on the far side of the six yard box. Wright slotted the cross neatly into the left side of the net to put TWU up 2-0 in the 15th minute.
Alicia Tesan (Vancouver) made it a three goal margin in the 36th minute. Tessa Meyer (Kelowna, B.C.) and Daniela Gerig (Fort Langley, B.C.) set up Tesan’s seventh goal of the season. They moved the ball around the park to eventually find Tesan alone in the middle of the Saskatchewan box. With plenty of time to take her shot, Tesan easily scored the Spartans third of the night.
The score could have been more lopsided in favour of the Spartans if not for the fine tending by Saskatchewan’s Wilford. The rookie keeper made 11 stops to keep her team in the contest.
TWU keeper Veronika Rogina (Langley, B.C.) made one save, but managed her penalty area effectively to prevent Saskatchewan from getting any quality chances.
Match Notes: The 11 wins gives TWU 33 points on the season which betters the programs previous best of 30 points which they set in 2008 and 2004 with 9-2-3 records… TWU has run their scoreless record to over five matches for a total of 471 minutes. The last goal that they gave up was in the 69th minute of their 2-1 loss to Victoria on Oct. 9… The program record for consecutive shutouts was four and the school record for consecutive scoreless minutes is 529, both were set in the 2003 season…TWU defeated Saskatchewan 3-2 on Sept 12 earlier this year in Saskatoon…
