NO. 8 TWU SPARTANS (2) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (0)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS MAKE IT FOUR STRAIGHT WITH WIN OVER HUSKIES
SASKATOON – On an unseasonably warm day in Saskatoon the No. 8 Trinity Western University Spartans used a 13-2 shot advantage to earn a 2-0 shutout victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Sunday afternoon at Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park. The Spartans are now 4-1 and sit in second place in the conference, while the Huskies now sit 3-2-1 and drop to fourth place in the Canada West standings.
“Very pleased with our overall performance, our composure and ability to pass and create chances was probably the difference against a solid and dangerous Saskatchewan team,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “In the end it is a very good road trip on a very hard trip because of the ability and competiveness of the league.”
The Spartans controlled the play early on and had quality opportunities by Colleen Webber, off of a Alicia Tesan corner kick, and Nikki Wright just fail to find the mark to start the match. Minutes later TWU’s Natalie Boyd and Daniela Gerig forced Saskatchewan’s Marissa Wilford to make back to back saves to keep the game scoreless in the opening minutes.
The Huskies best opportunity of the game came in the 13th minute when Lindsay Manz, on a setup from Daniela Fuenzalida, sent the ball just over the Spartans cross bar.
Trinity Western’s efforts were finally rewarded in the 32nd minute, when Spartans midfielder Melissa Mobilio took a quality pass from Webber, after receiving the corner from Tesan at the far post, and banged it past Saskatchewan’s Wilford to put the visitors from Langley, B.C. up 1-0.
Midway through the second half the Spartans would get the insurance marker. Saskatchewan’s Wilford thwarted Mobilio’s attempt on her second of the night, but the fifth year midfielder was able to flip the ball over to rookie forward Sarah-Kim Bergeron who put the Spartans up 2-0 in the 68th minute.
“We had excellent work and a very professional performance by Mellisa Mobilio, which resulted in our two goals,” commented Roxburgh.
The Huskies picked up the pace in the last few minutes of the match but were unable to overcome the two goal deficit.
TWU’s Kristen Funk made one save to earn her third shutout victory of the season, while Saskatchewan’s Wilford made six saves in the loss. “Our back four again were very good and Funk was very tidy. Caitlin Haines and Vanessa Kovacs were also very productive today,” added Roxbugh.
Next week after a brief visit back to TWU’s campus the Spartans will travel further west to match-up with the University of Manitoba Bisons then back to Saskatchewan to face the University of Regina Cougars, while the Huskies travel to the University of Alberta to face the Pandas.
Match Notes: Funk’s and TWU’s shutout streak currently sits at 301 minutes… TWU’s team record shutout streak, which was set in 2009, is six full games and 590:33 minutes…
