TRINITY WESTERN (6) CALGARY (1)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS SCORE SIX IN WIN OVER CALGARY
LANGLEY, British Columbia – For the second straight night, the No. 4 ranked Trinity Western women’s soccer team scored six goals as it put together another impressive performance that saw the Spartans knock off unranked Calgary 6-1 Saturday at Rogers Field.
Similar to Friday’s game, in which the Spartans beat Lethbridge with a six-goal attack, Trinity Western was the better team from the outset and were rewarded early and often.
The Spartans Jenna Di Nunzio (North Delta, B.C.) got the party started in the 13th minute and from there Trinity Western went on the offensive. The Spartans got goals from Nikki Byrne (Langley, B.C.) and Jessica King (Liverpool, England) before halftime and then, in the second half, it was Di Nunzio earning her second tally of the night before Krista Gommeringer (Calgary) rounded out the scoring with two of her own.
Calgary’s lone goal was scored by Kiyomi McInnes (Calgary) in the 65th minute.
Trinity Western was better in all facets against a young Calgary side that started eight first-year players. The Spartans finished with a 28-3 shot advantage and an 11-2 edge in shots on target.
The win moves the Spartans record to 2-0 while the loss drops Calgary to 0-2.
“I’m pleased but, and my players will laugh it this, but I’m not satisfied,” said Spartans coach Graham Roxburgh. “We found our front runners quite well. I thought in the second half we decided to play with a little bit more tempo and pressure and we generated some offence and were probably a little unlucky not to add to score line. But credit to their keeper. She made three or four great saves.”
After some early pressure and a few close calls, Di Nunzio opened the scoring for the Spartans when she buried a shot from just outside the six-yard box after receiving a low cross off the right wing from Alicia Tesan (Vancouver).
Following that, Trinity Western continued to pile on the pressure throughout the first half and in the 43rd minute doubled its lead when Byrne sent a ball into the box from well out that escaped the hands Calgary goalie Lauren Good (Red Deer, Alta.) and squeaked across the line.
Just over two minutes later, after a corner kick bounced around in the box, King found the ball at the top of the area and blasted home the Spartans third goal of the night, and her second of the season, to give Trinity Western a three-goal halftime cushion.
In the second half Di Nunzio once again sparked the offence as she scored her fourth goal of the season in the 47th minute when her shot from atop the box deflected off a Calgary defender and eluded the Dinos Good.
After that, it was Gommeringer getting in on the action with her third and fourth goals of the year in the 52nd and 82nd minutes respectively.
Sandwiched between Gommeringer’s strikes was the Dinos McInnes ending Spartans keeper Kristen Funk’s clean sheet in the 65th minute. McInnes she got her head to a Maddie Lee (Lethbridge, Alta.) free kick inside the box, beating the Trinity Western goalie to the far post.
Good finished the game with five saves on 11 shots while Funk made one save on two shots.
The Spartans Tesan hit three posts in the game but was unable to find the score sheet..
The Spartans are next in action Sept. 15 when they will host UBC at 5 p.m. at Rogers Field. Calgary will return home to host Alberta Sept. 14 and Mount Royal Sept. 15.
Notes – TWU had 13-0 edge in corner kicks…TWU was whistled for 13 fouls to Calgary’s four.
