Spartans Take three of four at Capilano Tourney
Blackburn named all-star

north Vancouver, British Columbia – TWU libero Julie Blackburn (3rd yr, Surrey, BC) was named to the tournament all-star team as the Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team won three of their four matches at the Capilano College tournament this past Friday and Saturday.

“It was a good weekend for us despite the loss to UBC,” said TWU head coach Carol Hofer. “[The loss] will be something that will motivate us to work hard over the coming weeks.”

The Spartans opened the tournament Fri. with wins over Simon Fraser University 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 26-24) and Malaspina University College 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-20).

TWU extended their winning streak to three matches with their four set (25-28, 25-21, 23-25, 25-14) win over the host Capilano College Blues. The Spartans found their lone loss of the tournament when the undefeated TWU team matched up against an undefeated UBC squad. The Thunderbirds took the match 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-23).

“It was disappointing to lose, because we had significant leads in the first and third set and we matched up fairly well,” said TWU head coach Carol Hofer. “We had a very good defensive effort and at different times we were in control of the offense. We just needed to get the offense and defense working at the same time.”

Julie Blackburn was named to the tournament all-star team. She had 56 digs in the four match tournament.

“Julie was the backbone of our defensive, she had a great performance,” said Hofer. “She was strong in her passing and defense and she was there when we really need her.”

Next up for the Spartans is Fri. Nov. 4 and Sat. Nov. 5, when they will host Thompson Rivers University. Match times on both nights are set for 6 pm at TWUs David E. Enarson Gym.
