Spartans Too Much For WolfPack
TWU wins first match of Canada West Play over TRU

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Led by the impressive performance of Saralyn Raugust (3rd yr, Delia, leftside, AB) with 12 kills and four blocks, the Spartans’ women’s volleyball team started the season off with their first victory in their first match over the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack. Raugust was the player of the game for Trinity Western as she killed 42% of the sets that went her way. TWU (1-0) had a great all around team effort that saw them win in straight sets (25-11, 25-20, 25-19) over TRU (1-4).

The first set had the Spartans out to a quick lead with the score 8-4 at the first timeout. The gap only got larger by the second timeout and had the Spartans up 16-7. TWU continued their dominance to finish the first set, winning 25-11. Saralyn Raugust led the attack for Trinity Western with 4 kills in the set.

In the second set TWU got the lead early, but the WolfPack closed the gap by the first timeout that had the Spartans up 8-7. By the second timeout Trinity Western started to establish the lead in the set going up 16-11. The two teams traded points for the remainder of the set as TWU won 25-20. Raugust again had a strong performance adding 4 more kills to her total.

The third and final set of the match saw the strong blocking of the Spartans give TWU an 8-6 lead heading into the first timeout. Trinity Western gained momentum after the break and quickly took a 14-8 lead. But the WolfPack clawed their way back into the set and by the second timeout had pulled to within three points with the Spartans 16-13. That was as close as TRU would get as TWU was just too strong for the undersized WolfPack team. The Spartans finished the match with a 25-19 third set win.

TWU Head Coach Carol Hofer was very pleased with her team’s performance and particularly impressed with Saralyn Raugust stating that, “she had an outstanding all around performance, she attacked well, passed well and blocked well.” Hofer was also impressed with the tough serving of Rhonda Schmuland (5th yr, middle, Calgary, AB), who had two aces.

Next up for the Spartans is tomorrow night against the WolfPack. Match time is set for 6 pm at the David E. Enarson Gym at Trinity Western University.

Match Notes: TWU had 10 team blocks to TRU’s five...the WolfPack hit at -6%, while the Spartans hit at 27%...this season is Thompson Rivers first as a member of Canada West and the CIS... Outside hitter Daniela Bercelli (Jundiai, Brazil) led the WolfPack with seven kills...
