(25-18, 25-16, 25-14)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Spartans’ Attack Strong Against WolfPack
TWU wins second match of Canada West play over TRU
LANGLEY, British Columbia – Backed by the strong overall play of Rhonda Schmuland (5th year, Calgary, middle, AB) with one ace, five kills and four blocks, TWU (2-0) earned their second victory in the young season in straight sets (25-18, 25-16, 25-14) over Thompson Rivers University(1-5). The Spartans defense and serving proved to be too much for the WolfPack to handle. TWU finished the match with ten team blocks and nine aces, while TRU finished with two team blocks and three aces.
The Spartans started first set strong jumping out to a commanding 8-2 lead by the first timeout. However, TRU fought hard to get back into the match and closed the gap to four points by the second timeout with the Spartans up 16-12. Trinity Western proved to be too much for Thompson Rivers in the first set finishing out the first set 25-18. Leigh Dreher (1st year, Prince George, leftside, BC) was the dominant player in the set having six kills and one block in the set.
In the second set TW started quickly again and had an 8-3 lead going into the first timeout. The Spartans piled on the points, stretching their lead to 16-7 at the second timeout. From that point on the Spartans cruised to victory, 25-16. Team defense was great for TWU as they had four blocks total in the set and held TRU to a 0% hitting average.
The third set started close but TWU was ahead once again at the first timeout 8-6. After time out TWU came out flying. The Spartans essentially finished of the WolfPack by going on a 8-2 run to increase their lead to 16-8 at the second timeout. TWU never looked back finishing out the final set 25-14.
Leigh Dreher had the top hitting performance as she hit 44% and had a total of nine kills, and Anna Paddock (4th year, Portland, setter, ME) had a great serving match as she had three aces.
Trinity Western now heads off to Simon Fraser next weekend for two matches against the Clan. Matches are on Sunday, November 13 at 4 pm and Monday, November 14 at 7 pm.
Match Notes: Trinity Western hit 26% while TRU hit at 4%... TWU had 10 total blocks to the WolfPack’s two... Robyn Devlin (Revelstoke, BC) had eight kills for TRU.
