SPARTANS ROLL IN STRAIGHT SETS
TWU wins sixth match of Canada West play 3-0 over Brandon University
LANGLEY, British Columbia - The ninth ranked Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team swept the Brandon University winning 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-18) Saturday night at TWU. The Spartans cruised in the first set winning handily and the second and third sets were closer but TWU was just too much for Brandon to handle.
Head coach Carol Hofer was pleased with her teams play saying, “we were more consistent tonight and received solid performances from all the players on the floor.”
Hofer was also happy with the team because, “we are starting to click and it’s just at the right time because our next match is against Winnipeg.” Winnipeg is ranked 10th in the country, just behind the Spartans.
In the first set it took a little time for the Spartans to get the momentum but by the second timeout they had established a solid 16-10 lead. From here Trinity Western really turned up the heat and finished with five straight points to win the first set 25-13.
TWU started the second set strong as they jumped out to an 8-4 lead by the first timeout. The Spartans continued their solid play building on their lead taking a 16-8 into the second timeout. The Bobcats fought hard to close the gap to five at 22-17, but it was too little too late as TWU won the second set 25-19.
The third set had Trinity Western start out fast leading 8-3 at the first timeout. However, Brandon closed the gap to two points at 11-9 to stay in the set. The Bobcats went into the second timeout trailing 16-13, but the Spartans were too much to handle as they closed out the match 25-18.
Saralyn Raugust (3rd year, leftside, Delia, Alta) led all Spartan players in the match with 10 kills, while Rhonda Schmuland (5th year, middle, Calgary, Alta) was huge at the net with eight kills and six blocks.
The top hitter for the Brandon was Carly Chivers (Winnipeg, Man) with seven kills, while teammate Jen Restall (Winnipeg, Man) had six kills. Krystle Bush (Grande Prairie, Alta) led all players in the match with 18 digs.
The next match for the Trinity Western Women’s volleyball team is December 2 at Winnipeg.
Match Notes: The Spartans hit at 24% while the Bobcats hit at 7%... TWU finished with 10 aces while Brandon had one.
