Spartans Dominate Pandas
#8 TWU takes out #2 Alberta 3-0 to move into first place in Canada West

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The eighth ranked Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team served the second ranked University of Alberta off the court Saturday night, as the Spartans swept the weekend series, 2-0. TWU showed that Friday night’s five set win was no fluke as they followed it up with a straight set victory 3-0 (25-23, 25-11, 25-20).

The Spartans’ serving - six aces and blocking - ten team blocks, kept the Pandas off balance all night. Alberta’s offense never got going as the Pandas finished with 22 errors while hitting only 6%. TWU finished the match hitting 23%.

The win moves the Spartans to 10-2, while the loss drops the Pandas to 9-3 in Canada West league play. The ten wins are good enough for first place in Canada West, two points better than UBC (9-1), Alberta and Calgary (9-2).

The first set had the two teams maintaining the energy that was displayed in last night’s match. Alberta took control early and jumped out to an 8-6 lead at the first time out. The Spartans Saralyn Raugust (Delia, Alta.) with six kills, sparked TWU to a 12-6 run and an 18-14 lead. TWU then used five team blocks to contain the Alberta attack as they closed out the set 25-23.

The Spartans kept the momentum going to start the second set as Julie Koepke (Vancouver) served the Spartans to a 5-0 lead, forcing the Pandas to take an early timeout. The Spartans kept the pace going as Jodi Schaufele (Surrey) gave TWU an 8-2 lead going into the first timeout. From that point on TWU absolutely dominated the set. The Spartans used three aces and a solid attack to take the set by an impressive 25-11 score. TWU finished the set hitting 44%, while Alberta finished at 3%.

Trinity Western did not let down to start the third set, as the Spartans led 8-6 at the first timeout. A stuff block by Alberta’s Kristin Van Eck (Leduc, Alta.) rallied the Pandas and tied the set at nine. The two teams remained tied at 13, when the Spartans used a 3-1 run to go into the second timeout leading 16-14. TWU got even better after the break as they extended their lead to 20-16 and forced Alberta into another timeout. The Spartans did not slow down. Liz Spear (Langley) pounded an Alberta pass into the ground to make it 22-17, and then Schaufele and Spear stuffed Tawana Wardlaw (Edmonton) forcing still another Alberta timeout. Jocelyn Blair (St. Albert, Alta.) hit long to give TWU match point 24-17. Tawana Wardlaw held off match point with a crosscourt attack to make it 24-18. Then four hits by TWU made the score 24-19. TWU’s Danielle Foth (Abbotsford) then hit long to make 24-20. Then Liz Spear hit a roller off of a couple of Alberta players to close out the match 25-20.

Saralyn Raugust with 10 kills (50%) and Danielle Foth with 11 kills and 13 digs led the Spartans, while Jocelyn Blair with seven kills and five digs led the Pandas. TWU’s Liz Spear led all players with eight blocks.

Next up for the Spartans is at Thompson Rivers University on Friday, January 13 and Saturday, January 14, 2006.
