SPARTANS CRUISE TO STRAIGHT SETS VICTORY
Julie Blackburn set school record for digs with 27

LANGLEY, British Columbia - The sixth ranked Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team forced their game onto Simon Fraser University winning 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-21) Friday night at TWU’s Langley, B.C. campus. The 13-2 Spartans controlled the play from the start and never let the 3-12 Clan into the match. The win extends the Spartans conference winning streak to nine matches.

Julie Blackburn led the Spartans as she set a school record for digs in a match with 27. Even though the match only went three sets, Blackburn’s 27 digs is the most recorded by an individual player in a Canada West match this season.

The Spartans quickly jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first set behind the strong serving of Danielle Foth (2nd year, leftside/rightside, Abbotsford) who had two aces at this point. Trinity Western went on to dominate the first set 25-11.

TWU continued to assert themselves in the second set winning 25-12.

The Clan kept the third set close and were only down by one point at the second timeout, 16-15. But the Spartans were just too much tonight as they closed out the match with a 25-21 win.

 Jodi Schaufele (4th year, leftside, Surrey) and Danielle Foth led all players with nine kills in the match. Anna Hilborn (Coquitlam) led the attack for the Clan with six kills.

The two teams will face off again tomorrow night. Match time at TWU is set for 6 p.m.

Match Notes: TWU hit at 29%, while SFU hit at 4%... the Spartans had eight aces; while the Clan had three ... Trinity Western had nine blocks, while Simon Fraser had two...Blackburn held the previous record of 24 digs, which she hit on three different occasions...
