(25-17, 25-13, 25-20)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS HAVE STRAIGHT SETS WEEKEND
Strong team play gives TWU their 10th straight win
LANGLEY, British Columbia - Trinity Western University’s women’s volleyball team improved their record to 14-2 against the Simon Fraser University Clan in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-20) win Saturday night at TWU’s Langley, B.C. campus. The Clan (3-13) challenged the Spartans in the third set, but were unable to match the sixth ranked Spartans down the stretch.
Julie Blackburn (3rd year, libero, Surrey) put in another great night on defense with 13 digs in the match, but it was the strong overall team effort that won the match for the Spartans. TWU led all stat categories in the straight sets win.
SFU kept the first set close up to the second timeout where they trailed 16-13 but TWU started to work their offense and won the first set easily 25-17.
The second set was all Spartans as they took the set 25-13.
In the third set the Clan started quickly leading 8-6 at the first break in action. SFU continued to match TWU through the second timeout and were tied at 17-17. The Clan trailed the Spartans 21-20, but a service error combined with three straight serves by TWU’s Danielle Foth (2nd yr, LS/RS, Abbotsford) allowed the Spartans to closeout the set and the match 25-20.
The Clan’s Anna Hilborn (Coquitlam) led all players in the match with six kills. Danielle Foth and Saralyn Raugust (4th yr, leftside, Delia, Alta.) with five kills each led a balanced Spartan attack. TWU’s Dayna Jansen VanDoorn (Langley) led all players with eight points. The second year middle finished with four kills (67%), four blocks and one service ace.
The next match for Trinity Western is February third and fourth at home versus the number two ranked UBC Thunderbirds. The outcome of the weekend’s matches will go a long way in determining who will clam the top spot in Canada West as the teams enter the post season.
