(20-25, 25-21, 21-25, 17-25)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
#5 TWU FALLS IN FOUR SETS TO #2 UBC
UBC ends TWU’s 10 game win streak
LANGLEY, British Columbia -The fifth ranked Trinity Western women’s volleyball team faced off against the second ranked University of British Columbia Friday night at TWU’s Langley campus. At stake this weekend was the top spot in Canada West. The Spartans battled the Thunderbirds throughout the match. TWU had a solid night blocking, but the UBC offense and their ability to dig the ball proved to be the difference as the Thunderbirds took the match 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-21, 25-17). The loss ends the Spartans ten match winning streak and drops the Spartans to 14-3, while the win improves the Thunderbirds to 16-1.
The first set was a battle for the upper hand and UBC was up 16-14 going into the second timeout. UBC built on their lead and won the first set handily 25-20.
Tough serving by Liz Spear (3rd year, middle, Langley) earned the Spartans three straight points and gave them the early lead at 6-2. Trinity Western continued to run their offence and was ahead 16-11 at the second break in action. A big block by Jodi Schaufele (4th year, leftside, Surrey) ended a long rally and put the score at 21-17 late in the set. Another block for the Spartans ended the set at 25-21.
British Columbia led early in the third set, 8-5 at the first timeout. The Spartans fought hard to close in on the Thunderbirds but still trailed 16-14 at the second break. TWU continued to pour it on and trailed by one point late in the set, 21-20. But after a timeout the Thunderbirds reasserted themselves and won the set 25-21.
The fourth set had the makings of another tight set as UBC was up 8-6 at the first break. UBC established a big lead going into the second timeout up 16-9. TWU then went on a four point run to close the lead to 17-14. That was as close as the Spartans would get as the Thunderbirds closed out the set and the match 25-17.
Emily Cordonier (Vancouver) of the Thunderbirds led all players in the match with 19 kills. Liz Spear led the offence for Trinity Western with 12 kills, while Danielle Foth (2nd year, rightside, Abbotsford, BC) led the defense with 14 digs on the match.
The rematch for these two teams is set for tomorrow night at 6 pm in the David Enarson gymnasium.
Match Notes: TWU hit at 19%, while UBC hit at 28%... TW had 44 digs; while the Thunderbirds had 56... Trinity Western had 10 blocks, to British Columbia’s four.
