#5 TWU pushes #2 UBC to five sets but comes up just short
LANGLEY, British Columbia – The fifth ranked Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team pushed the second ranked University of British Columbia to five sets Saturday night at TWU. But the Thunderbirds came from behind to win the match 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-13, and 15-10). With the loss the Spartans (14-4) can no longer take first place from UBC (17-1) in the Canada West conference.
Trinity Western started the first set strong and were rewarded with an 8-6 lead at the first timeout. The Thunderbird and Spartans fought hard for control of the set as the two teams remained tied at 18-18 late in the set. The second set was setting up for another tight game as the TWU held a slight advantage at the second timeout 16-14. Both teams were playing well and it was all square at 23-23 late in the set. After a long rally the Thunderbirds went up 24-23 and on the next point Jodi Schaufele (4th year, leftside, Surrey) just missed the line on a kill and UBC squeaked out a 25-23 win.

Set four was all UBC as they led 16-9 at the second timeout and went on to easily win the set 25-13.
The solid service game of Emily Cordonier (Vancouver) gave UBC a huge lead in the fifth set as the Thunderbirds rattled off six straight point to go up 9-2. Three straight kills by the Spartans Liz Spear (3rd year, middle, Langley) brought TWU to within two points as they trailed 11-8.
