IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Huskies Shock Spartans
Fifth ranked TWU falls to unranked Saskatchewan
SASKATOON, Saskatchewan – In their final weekend of action, the University of Saskatchewan women's volleyball team defeated the CIS fifth-ranked Trinity Western University Spartans in five sets 25-22, 14-25, 25-23, 13-25, 15-13 en route to Huskies fourth conference victory. The win improves the Huskies record to 4-15, while Trinity Western moves to 14-5.
“We struggled to find consistent rhythm; we just couldn’t get things going. Saskatchewan came out strong and hungry and we were not able to respond,” said TWU Head Coach Carol Hofer. “The little details cost us tonight, and tomorrow we are going to need to take care of the little details if we are going to take the match.”
The Huskies took the first, third and fifth sets with close scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 15-13, respectively. The Spartans, on the other hand, won their sets quite handily by scores of 25-14 and 25-13.
Trinity Western's Danielle Foth had the match-high 13 kills, with a 42.3% attack percentage. Liz Spear and Saralyn Raugust had 12 kills apiece. Julie Blackburn had the match-high 22 digs, while Foth recorded 12. Anna Paddock had the match-high 53 set assists, while Leigh Dreher also had a match-high, with four service aces.
Fourth-year leftside Arla Cornish recorded a season high of 17 digs for the Huskies, Elise Schill had 14 digs, while Shannon Usher had 12. Leading the way in kills for the green and white was Erica Fraser. Setter Maja Cerovsek made 43 set assists.
The two teams will meet again on Sat, Feb. 11 for the Huskies last regular season action. Match starts at 6:15pm at the PAC on College.
Match Notes: Other then UBC, Saskatchewan is the only Canada West team to defeat TWU in conference play this season...
