Spartans Clinch Second with Win
TWU to host first round of playoffs
SASKATOON, Saskatchewan – After dropping Friday night’s match to the University of Saskatchewan the Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team needed a win Saturday night to clinch second place in Canada West. The Spartans were once again pushed by the Huskies, TWU trailed 2-1 but were able to win the final two sets to take the match 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 15-9). The win moves the fifth ranked Spartans to 15-5, while the loss drops the Huskies to 4-16.
“Tonight was a great team effort, Saskatchewan made us work really hard for every point,” said TWU Head Coach Carol Hofer. “We had good performances all around. We are really proud to solidify second place and too be able to host. But we know that we did not find the rhythm that we were hoping for, so we will be working on that as we get ready for the playoffs.”
TWU will now host the first round of the Canada West playoffs against Regina, Manitoba or Winnipeg. The best of three series goes Thursday-Saturday, February 16-18 at TWU with matches starting at 6 p.m. The Saturday match will be if necessary.
Leading the fifth ranked Spartans were Liz Spear (12 kills) and Rhonda Schmuland (10 kills), while Julie Blackburn recorded 19 digs. Anna Paddock had five service aces.
Playing her last league game in the PAC, Andrea Marciak had the match-high 13 kills. Libero Elise Schill had the match-high 22 digs.
