FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TWU WINS FIRST EVER HOME PLAYOFF MATCH
#10 Regina pushes but doesn’t break #6 Trinity Western
LANGLEY, British Columbia – The playoff match between the sixth ranked Trinity Western University (15-5) women’s volleyball team and the tenth ranked University of Regina (12-8) was tight from start to finish. In the end TWU won the match 3-1 (25-27, 26-24, 25-20, 25-21), but not before the Cougars pushed the Spartans for every point. TWU now leads the best of three series 1-0, with match two set for tomorrow night at 6 p.m.
Saralyn Raugust (3rd year, leftside, Delia, Alta.) was a force on the court leading all players in the match with 18 kills and hitting efficiently at 29%. Every time the Spartans needed a big kill, setter Anna Paddock (4th year, setter, West Simsbury, Conn) called on Raugust to finish the point off.
In the first set it took a while for Trinity Western to establish a lead, but an ace from Anna Paddock led the Spartans into the second timeout up 16-9. Regina worked hard to get back into the set and pulled even at 22-22 following a missed kill by Raugust. TWU fought off two set points but an ace from the Cougars Beth Clark (Regina) finished off the first set 27-25.
The second set had the Spartans with the lead at the second timeout 16-12. But Regina once again closed the lead to 21-20 late in the set. An ace from Liz Spear (3rd year, middle, Langley) gave TWU set point at 24-21 but there was no giving up in the Cougars as they tied the set at 24-24. A kill from Saralyn Raugust followed by a huge block by Rhonda Schmuland (5th year, middle, Calgary) gave Trinity Western the set 26-24.
TWU had the lead early in the third set leading 8-3 at the first timeout. U of R came back again as they close the lead to 16-13 at the second break. Regina continued to push as they closed the gap to one point, trailing 20-19. TWU finished the set strong and closed the set out 25-20. Saralyn Raugust had a solid set leading the TW offence with five kills.
The fourth set was another tight one as TWU held a slight edge at the second timeout 16-14. Danielle Foth (2nd year, leftside, Abbotsford) had a huge kill to give TWU the lead late in the set 21-20. It would be as close as Regina would get as TWU’s Liz Spear finished the set with a mammoth block, 25-21.
Julie Blackburn (3rd year, libero, Surrey) led all players defensively with 21 digs, while Kelly Cowan (Winnipeg) led the Cougars with 19. Teammate Beth Clark had the second most kills in the match with 15.
Match Notes: TWU hit at 17%, while U of R hit at 11%... the Spartans had 16 blocks; while the Cougars had five... TWU had 80 digs to Regina’s 77.
