UPSET IN FIVE SETS BY THE COUGARS
#10 Regina defeats #6 TWU to force a sudden death match
LANGLEY, British Columbia – It was a heartbreaking loss for the Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team Friday night at TWU. The Spartans fell in five sets, 3-2 (25-22, 15-25, 20-25, 25-21, 16-14) to the University of Regina in the Canada West Quarter Final match. With the win the Cougars forced a final match in the best of three series. On the line in tomorrow’s match is a trip to the Canada West playoffs and a possible trip to nationals in Calgary.
Regina was quick out of the gate in the first set and had a 16-8 lead at the second timeout. However, TWU rattled off six straight points to close the gap to 17-14. The Spartans continued the comeback and came to within one point at 23-22, but the Cougars won the next two points to take the first set 25-22.
The second set had the Spartans out to a big lead by the second break, up 16-9. TWU didn’t let the Cougars back into the set and won 25-15.
Set three was closer with the two teams trading off side outs, but Trinity Western managed a slim lead at the second break 16-14. A kill from Rhonda Schmuland (5th year, middle, Calgary) gave the Spartans their biggest lead of the set and took it to set point. Danielle Foth (2nd year, leftside, Abbotsford, B.C.) had a big swing from the right side to finish the set 25-20.
In the fourth set the Cougars had a lead at 16-13 at the second break. Regina held off a late rally from Trinity Western and won the set 25-21.
Early in the fifth set the teams were trading points off and Regina had an 8-7 lead at the switch. TWU swung the momentum their way with three straight points to take a 10-8 lead. But Regina fought back into the set tying it at 11-11. Jodi Schaufele (4th year, leftside, Surrey) provided a huge spark off of the bench coming into the set and getting two kills late in the set to give the Spartans match point at 14-13. The Spartans couldn’t capitalize and gave Regina match point at 15-14. A kill from Tammy Jule (Regina Beach, Sask.) finished the match with Regina winning 16-14.
Regina’s Tammy Jule and TWU’s Liz Spear (3rd year, middle, Langley) tied for a match high 17 kills. Julie Blackburn (3rd year, libero, Surrey) had another strong defensive game leading all players with 25 digs.
Tomorrow’s match time is set for 6 pm at the David E. Enarson gymnasium.
