SPARTANS GOING TO NATIONALS
#6 TWU knocks off #10 Regina in final match of best of three series

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team saved their best performance of the weekend for last as they beat the University of Regina in straight sets, 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-16). With the win the Spartans clinch a berth in the CIS National Championship for the first time in their short seven year history as part of the CIS. Liz Spear (3rd year, middle, Langley) was named player of the match for her extraordinary individual effort compiling nine blocks, and adding eight kills in the short three set match.

The win advances the Spartans to the Canada West final four next Friday and Saturday at the University of British Columbia and an automatic berth at the CIS national championships March 2-4 at the University of Calgary.

TWU took control of the first set early and built up a 16-7 lead by the second timeout. Despite a late rally from the Cougars which cut the lead to 22-17, the Spartans took the first set 25-17.

Regina took a quick lead in the second set 10-5 but Trinity Western closed the gap quickly and took the lead by the second break 16-15. Tough serving from Alicia Van Huizen (3rd year, leftside, Surrey) forced the Cougars out of their offensive routine and TW capitalized with five straight points putting the score at 22-17. Jodi Schaufele (4th year, leftside, Surrey) finished off the set for TWU with a tip over two defenders which made the final score 25-20.

In the third set the Spartans held nothing back and had a big lead once again at the second break, 16-8. Liz Spear put the finishing touch on the match and the Cougars season with a huge block. The Spartans won the set 25-16.

The Spartans Jodi Schaufele led all players with 10 kills while teammate Julie Blackburn (3rd year, libero, Surrey) led the defensive show with 17 digs. Beth Clark (Regina) led the Cougars offence with seven kills.

Match Notes: TWU hit at 25%, while U of R hit at 1%... the Spartans had 12 blocks; while the Cougars had four... the Spartans advance to the CIS National Championships for the first time in their history.
