Spartans Claim Bronze at Final Four
Schaufele hits Career mark as TWU tops Calgary 3-2
VANCOUVER- The Trinity Western Spartans staved off match point en route to a nail-biting 3-2 victory over the Calgary Dinos to capture the bronze medal at the Canada West Final Four Friday afternoon at UBC (25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 23-25, 16-14).
With the Dinos leading 14-13 in the thrilling fifth and final frame, Danya Jansen Van Doorn and Anna Paddock combined for a game-saving block to even the count at 14-14 before a Calgary error gave Trinity Western a one-point edge and a match point of their own. The Spartans made no mistake on the ensuing play, notching another timely block as Liz Spear and Saralyn Raugust stuffed the Dinos attack.
“This is a great victory for our team,” said TWU head coach Carol Hofer, whose squad dropped a 3-2 decision to the Alberta Pandas to open tournament play yesterday. “This whole tournament was about us coming in and learning how to win a championship and we’re excited that we could learn from yesterday, respond and come in today and play composed and pull the win off.”
After trailing 10-3 to open the first set, the Spartans found their rhythm midway through, scoring five straight points, including a pair of aces from Paddock, to close the gap to 10-8. The Spartans continued to claw their way back into it taking their first lead at 19-18 in the midst of another five-point run as Raugust put home a pair of blocks and a kill before the second seed went on to a 25-22 win.
The seesaw battle persisted into the second with Calgary rallying from a three-point deficit (17-14) to jump out in front 22-20 on a Spartan miscue after Laura Spence and Lauren Perry found the floor on back-to-back tries. Trinty Western tied it up at 24-apiece a few points later but the Dinos persevered to take the frame 26-24 with a kill from Deanna Delisle.
In the third frame, the Spartans trailed early once again, falling behind 8-3, before four straight points gave them a 16-13 edge that they would not relinquish. Calgary tied it up twice before the set was out, but a well-placed kill from Jodi Schaufele made it a 25-22 win for Trinity Western.
The fourth was much of the same with neither side leading by more than a three (9-6 Trinity Western) before the Dinos exploded five points in-a-row on three Spartans errors and a block and a kill from Delisle to push ahead 23-19. Trinity Western attempted a late run of their own but it wasn’t enough as Calgary grabbed the last two points for a 25-23 win, setting the stage for the deciding fifth set.
Raugust paced the Spartans on the attack with 13 kills, while adding eight digs and four blocks. Spear and Danielle Foth chipped in 12 kills each and Schaufele tallied 11. Julie Blackburn dug a match-high 26 balls, while Schaufele had 13, Paddock 12, and Foth 13. Jansen Van Doorn had an impressive day at the block, racking up 11 blocks to lead all players, while pacing a Spartan side that recorded 17 team blocks to their opponents 9.
Julie Young turned in a team-high 17 kills for Calgary , while Perry had 15 and Delisle added 12. Four Dinos went for double-figures in digs with Natalie Schwartz and Neda Boroumand digging 20 balls each and Perry and Young grabbing 18 and 11 digs, respectively.
“It’s definitely a big win,” said Hofer. “Anytime you can go into the nationals winning is important. We need to go in with a little momentum and a bit of confidence. We know that it’s going to be a dogfight at nationals. Every game is going to be tough, but to have that victory here just gives us a little bit of a boost.
Match Notes: with tonight's 11 kills Jodi Schaufele officially moves into top place in the career kills category...passing former Spartan, Lies Verhoeff by 1...Jodi has 704 career kills, Lies 703....for the second night in row TWU’s Dayna Jansen Van Doorn set a career high in blocks...last night she had seven, tonight she finished with 11...
