Spartans Fall to Dinos
TWU drops first CIS Championship match 3-0 to Calgary

CALGARY – The Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team opened their first ever CIS championship with a 3-0 loss to the Championship host, University of Calgary, Thursday night in Calgary. The pressure of their first experience on a championship court showed in the first set as the Spartans struggled early and fell 25-17. TWU regrouped and took control of the second set and led 12-3 early in the set, but the Dinos rallied from the deficit to take the critical set 26-24. The loss took the wind out of the Spartans as the Dinos used the energy from the home crowd and the momentum of the second set victory to sweep the Spartans with a 25-16 third set win.

“It was a disappointing loss for us tonight. We came here to have a best performance and we didn't get that from each other or as a team tonight and it's really tough to win at a National tournament when you don't do that” said TWU Head Coach Carol Hofer. “The things that have been strengths for us all year just weren't there for us tonight.”

When asked about what her team has learned from its first experience at the CIS National Championship Coach Hofer responded “It's harder to win than you think. I don't say that because I think we took it lightly, I think we did what we thought was needed and I think we recognize now that we needed more - we need to work harder and to learn to win in this setting with the pressure of the tournament and the pressure of other teams just as eager to win. Those are lessons we need to learn.”

The Dinos came out strong in the first set, with power-hitter Julie Young pacing the home team to a 16-8 lead by the second technical time out. The Spartans made several unforced errors in the set, and never looked comfortable falling 25-17 to the home-town squad. Young had four kills in the set.

The Spartans collected themselves in time for the second set and gained a quick 12-3 lead thanks to some great play at the net from power-hitter Jodi Schaufele and great serves by Second-Team All Canadian Liz Spear who served nine straight before the Dinos finally got the game to 12-4. The Spartans were looking much more confident than in the first set.

The Dinos managed to claw back to 13-7 thanks to a couple of kills by power hitter Lauren Perry, and kept inching closer, eventually getting to 22-19 forcing the Spartans to take a time out. The Dinos made it 22-21 on a long rally thanks to two great digs in the backcourt by Julie Young that eventually forced a mistake from the Spartans, and tied the game at 23-23 on a block by middle Deanna Delisle. Another block by Carolyn Macdonald made it 24-23 Dinos, but Trinity’s Danielle Foth tied it at 24-24. Unfortunately for the Spartans, Foth sent the subsequent serve into the net and Macdonald came up with another block to win it for the Dinos 26-24.

The Dinos carried the momentum of the play and the hometown crowd into the third set, with Delisle serving the Dinos to a quick 6-0 before placing the ball into the net. Dinos setter and Second Team All Canadian Natalie Schwartz served the home side from 10-4 to 14-4, but the Spartans began to show a little life bringing it to 16-8 at the second technical timeout. The Spartans as came close as 20-14 after a Laura Spence service error, but the Dinos rattled off three straight points to make it 23-14 and won the match on a kills from Julie Young.

Julie Young paced the home side with 11 kills and 13 digs, while TWU was led by power-hitter Jodie Schaufele who had 7 kills, and by 2005/06 Libero of the Year Julie Blackburn who had 13 digs. The Spartans, in their seventh year of CIS volleyball and at their first national championship, have yet to win a set on the Dinos home court in their CIS history.

The Spartans will now play on the consolation side against Saint Mary’s University Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. MST.

Match Notes: TWU finished the match hitting at 2.8%, while Calgary finished at 20.4%...the Dinos had 12 team blocks, while the Spartans finished with five team blocks...Calgary finished with 56 digs to TWU’s 48...TWU defeated Calgary 3-2 in the Canada West bronze medal match last Saturday at the University of British Columbia...
