Spartans Rebound with Win
#4 TWU tops Saint Mary’s, to face Alberta in consolation final
CALGARY - The Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team rebounded from Thursday night’s tough loss to the Calgary Dinos with a solid effort against the Saint Mary’s University Huskies Friday afternoon in Calgary. The Spartans booked a spot in the consolation final of the 2006 Canadian Interuniversity Sport women’s volleyball championship with a 3-0 win (25-21, 25-18, 25-16) over the Huskies.
"It's a new day today and it's a new team today. We had a solid team effort and we got better performances out of almost everybody,” said TWU Head Coach Carol Hofer. “It feels good to see [the performance] come out but at the same time it's bittersweet because we know if we would've brought that out yesterday it might have been a different story."
Trinity Western, who entered the tournament seeded fourth, but then lost their opening match to the No. 5 Calgary Dinos, is playing in its first national championship since joining the CIS in 1999. The Spartans opponent on Saturday will be the No. 3 University of Alberta Pandas who defeated the University of Windsor earlier in the day, after being upset by Montreal in the first round. The two teams will square off at 10 am MST.
When asked what the Spartans plan to do in tomorrow’s match against Alberta, Hofer responded, “We are just going to build on this now and we're excited to get a redemption match against Alberta so we'll be gearing up for that for tomorrow. We want to come out with consistent focus and energy, and we want to come out with our best performance leaving nothing behind. It's our last opportunity to learn from this weekend and to build for the future."
In the first set of the night Trinity Western led 8-4 at the technical break but Saint Mary’s fought back taking 12 of the next 17 points lead 16-15 at the break. The Spartans regrouped taking five of the next seven points to take a 20-17 lead forcing the Huskies to take their first timeout. TWU did not let SMU get on a run as they were able to close out the 25-21 thanks to seven kills from all-Canadian Liz Spear.
In the second set Saint Mary’s went ahead 8-5 at the first break and they looked to be making a match of the contest as they stretched the margin to 12-5 before Trinity Western roared back with eight straight points taking a 13-12 lead. The Spartans continued hot leading 16-14 at the technical break. TWU took control of the match taking four of the next five points to lead 20-15 and ultimately won the set 25-18 to go ahead two games to nil.
The third set saw the Spartans led 8-5 at the first break in the third set and took control of the match moving out to a 20-13 margin before winning the set and match 25-16.
Spear had 13 kills leading the Spartans’ offense while CIS libero of the year Julie Blackburn had 14 digs on the defensive end.
Spear was named Player of the Match for TWU, while setter Erin MacKenzie earned similar honours for the Huskies.
