FORMER SPARTAN COACH GILRAY TO REPLACE ADAMS
LANGLEY, British Columbia - Trinity Western University women's volleyball coach Ryan Hofer announced today that former Spartans assistant Mike Gilray, 2003-2006, will be rejoining the program replacing former assistant coach Ryan Adams.
"I am looking forward to the knowledge and experience he is going to bring to this program. He is always willing to learn and then apply his knowledge to the athletes. Mike is a teacher at heart and his skills as a teacher have made him one of the top club coaches in the country. His athlete's level of improvement and growth on and off the court are second to none. Mike has an amazing ability to communicate with athletes and bring out their best. I am excited to bring in his level of commitment to excellence and his desire to not just succeed on the court but off the court as well. Mike is committed to developing leaders, seeing them impact each other and their community, making him a fantastic fit for TWU." - Ryan Hofer.
Gilray brings an extremely successful coaching resume back to the Spartans. He just finished winning his sixth straight Provincial Championship with the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club Blitz.and has been named the Canada Games Beach Coach for the summer of 2009. Previously he coached the FVVC to five national championship medals, including two gold medals, and six BC Provincial championships.
Gilray has been with the FVVC since 2003 where he was an assistant with the U18 and U20 teams from 2003 to 2006 and head coach of the U18 team from 2007 to 2009. He has also been involved with coaching team BC since 2002, in 2002 and 2004 he was head coach of the summer games beach U16 team, in 2005 and 2007 he coached the beach U18 team and in 2008 he coached the U20 team. His coaching success earned Gilray the U-18 BC Club Coach of the Year award in 2007.
"I am excited to welcome Mike back to Spartan Volleyball and bring him in to an already strong coaching staff. Mike brings a skill set that will complement and strengthen our team," added Hofer.
The Surrey, B.C. resident's coaching experience also includes: being Harry Ainlay High School assistant coach in 2001 and being White Rock Christian Academy head coach in 2003
Gilray, who graduated from the University of Alberta with degrees in Education and Physical Education in 2001, is currently a teacher in the Surrey School district at Johnston Heights Secondary.
