TOUGH MATCH-UPS CONTINUE WITH NO. 2 WESMEN

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– After splitting with the then No. 2 Alberta Pandas last week the No. 7 Trinity Western now host the current No. 2 University of Winnipeg. Match times at the LEC are set for 6 p.m. Friday night and 5 p.m. Saturday night.  The last matches between the Spartans and Wesmen took place in November 2010, when the Spartans swept the weekend with scores of 3-2 and 3-1.

Trinity Western Spartans (8-4)
Last Weekend: Alberta 3-0 W, 3-2 L
2011 CIS Rank: 7
2010-2011 CW Record: 15-3, 2nd
2010-2011 CW Tournament: 3-1, 2nd
2010-2011 CIS Tournament: 2-1, 3rd

Last weekend the Spartans faced the No. 3 Alberta Pandas in a pair of games at the David E. Enarson Gym on the Langley, B.C. campus.

In the first game the Spartans shocked the favoured Pandas with three wins in a row to take the match. The first set was Spartan led from the first serve, as the Spartans never conceded a lead to their Alberta rivals and finished with a 25-21 win. The second set was a completely different story as Alberta took a decisive nine point lead by the middle of the match, only to be upset by a Spartan comeback during the latter half of the game that resulted in a 25-22 Trinity Western victory. The third set made for another different set of obstacles, as the two teams matched points often in the middle of the game. But the Spartans pulled away towards the end of the set in order to score a 25-22 win and take the match 3-0.

Kelci French was a standout for Trinity Western as she had seven service aces and added eight digs and 11 assists to the team effort.

The following night the Spartans played in front of a roaring crowd at the David E. Enarson in a rematch. Trinity was bested by Alberta right off the bat in a 25-17 first set that was tight until the Pandas opened scoring up towards the end and stole the win. But the Spartans were not about to lay down, and made it up with a convincing 25-20 win in the second set to even the score. In the third set the Spartans led nearly from start to finish, making it 2-1 with a solid 25-18 set win. However, this would be the last Spartan set as the Pandas took control and the last two sets with scores of 26-24 and 15-10.

University of Winnipeg Wesmen (12-2)
Last Weekend: Saskatchewan 3-0 W, 3-1 W
2012 CIS Rank: 2
2010-2011 CW Record: 6-12
2010-2011 CW Tournament: N/A
2010-2011 CIS Tournament: N/A

The Wesmen have been impressive this season following a disappointing 2010-2011 season. Last weekend Winnipeg played the winless Huskies in a two game stand on Saskatchewan’s home court.

The No. 2 Wesmen made it look easy in their first of two games against the Huskies. Well rested after a long exam and holiday break, Winnipeg took no time at all in securing a 25-17 first set win. This was followed by a humiliating 25-11 win over the Huskies that put the Wesmen position for the last set, another 25-17 win over the host Huskies.

Lauren Sears finished with a game-high 16 kills and .682 hitting percentage, while also topping both teams with three service aces.

The following night was similarly Wesmen-dominated, with the exception of the first set. The Huskies managed to find their footing in set one and succeeded in taking a 25-22 win over the Wesmen. Down 1-0, the Wesmen rebounded to roundly beat the Huskies in a 25-17 game.  They followed this up with two more quick wins with scores of 25-16 and 25-20 to finish the match ahead 3-1.

The Wesmen were led once again by Sears’ 20 kills, while Tesca Andrew-Wasylik led both teams with 12 digs.

The last game between the Spartans and Wesmen took place in November 2010, when the Spartans won two games in a row with scores of 3-2 and 3-1.

Both matches will be streamed live on Canadawest.TV. You can also follow the Spartans on Twitter @TWUSpartans or on YouTube at www.youtube/SpartansSID.
