Spartans drop two in Edmonton

Langley, British Columbia –
On Friday October 8 the Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team traveled to Edmonton, Alta. to compete in the Grant MacEwan Griffan Cup Invitational women’s volleyball tournament.  Participating in this years Griffen Cup are some of the top college teams in the country.  Five of the eight participating teams were ranked in the top 15 in the CCAA at the end of last year (Feb 16 national rankings).  Included in this years draw are Grant MacEwan College (7), Kings University College, Red Deer College (3), Lethbridge Community College, Mount Royal College (13), Grand Prairie College (4), and the Grant MacEwan Alumni.

In the opening match of the day Trinity Western faced the Mount Royal College Cougars.  The Spartans battled but in the end they lost a close match 3-1 (16-25, 25-18, 16-25, 20-25).

“We played against a strong team that ran a very quick offense.  After the first game we made some adjustments which helped us to a victory in the second game. Kara Hendrickson made some adjustments and had a strong second game at the net for us. Poor service reception prevented us from winning the third and fourth games of the match. Lauren Suderman led the team with strong leadership and 7 kills,” commented TWU coach Larry Plenert.

The second match saw the Spartans face the Grande Prairie Wolves.  The Wolves are considered to be a contender for this year’s CCAA national championship. The Wolves showed their strength as the Spartans fell 3-0 (17-25, 21-25, 10-25).

“The Wolves are a very strong team. The score does not indicate the quality of play in the first two games.  We played a much stronger match and showed a lot of improvement over this mornings match against Mount Royal,” said Coach Larry Plenert.

The Spartans continue tournament play tomorrow morning against the Grant McEwan Alumni.  Game time is 11:00 am MT.
