Spartans Extend Winning Streak
Langley, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University women’s volleyball started a new streak Saturday night. A winning streak! As the Spartans defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (26-28, 25-14, 25-14, 25-22) on the final night of league play. The weekend sweep gives the Spartans a 2 game winning streak in Canada West league play for the first time in school history.
“Tonight was probably our most unified night of the season, said TWU head coach Carol Hofer. “This has been a great weekend for us. It is great to get the wins and it was good that we had everybody contributing.”
The night did not start out the best for the Spartans as they dropped a tough first set 28-26.
But as the match went on Jolene Dryfhout (3rd yr, P, Surrey, BC) and the Spartans got stronger. Dryfhout – 14 kills, 11 digs and 3 service aces, led the Spartans to two lopsided victories (25-14, 25-14) before the Spartans finished the match with a 25-22 win.
“Jolene played very aggressive tonight,” said Hofer. “When we needed the kill Jo stepped up and got it for us.”
The Spartans had another strong game from rookie of the year candidate Kristen Groot (1st yr, P, Burnaby, BC) – 10 kills, 4 digs. “Kristen has played steady for us all year,” said Hofer. “She is starting to show the makings of great CIAU player.”
The Wesmen were led by Christine Loschiavo (1st yr, LS, Winnipeg, MB) – 7 kills, 15 digs and Jolene Shewchuk (2nd yr, RS/L, Edmonton, AB) – 17 kills.
The Spartans strong serving – 12 aces, kept the Wesmen off balance for most of the match. “When ever you can serve tough against a team, they are going to be in trouble especially if they do not receive well,” said Hofer.
With the two wins this weekend the Spartans conclude the season with a 2-20 record and finish 5th in Canada West.
