TWU Spartans (1) vs. the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (3)
(25-23, 14-25, 15-25, 23-25)
Solid Effort by Spartans
Langley, British Columbia – The Spartan women’s volleyball team turned it around tonight, coming out strong to take the first set and battling hard in the final three before falling to the UBC Thunderbirds 3-1 (25-23, 14-25, 15-25, 23-25).
“It was a much better start than last night,” said Coach Carol Hofer. “It felt good to come out strong and we matched up well with them in the first set.”
A lack of consistency in the second and third sets resulted in the less competitive scores, but the Spartans came back fired up for the fourth set. Trinity Western led for the entire set, and at one point were up 20-16, before UBC rallied and came back to tie the score at 22. Some panicky play at the end resulted in costly mistakes and the Spartans could not hold on for the win.
The women played well even without one of their top hitters, Jodi Schaufele, who did not play because she is injured.
“We had good play from Daelyn [Martens], who had 13 digs and passed extremely well tonight. Kristin [Groot] was also solid, with 14 kills. And Rhonda [Schmuland] played very well. On the whole it was a better night for the entire team, and we look forward to gearing up for SFU next week.”
TWU hosts SFU Friday, January 17th and Saturday, January 18th at 6:00pm.
Game Notes: Rhonda Schmuland had 10 kills, 3 blocks and .400 attack percentage…Christine Bonish led UBC with 14 kills…
