FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS SHUT-OUT HUSKIES
TWU opens Canada West 2-0 by taking six straight of Saskatchewan

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan
Liz Spear (Cloverdale, B.C.), Alicia Van Huizen (Surrey, B.C.) and Julie Blackburn (Surrey, B.C.) all finished with 12’s as the Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team swept the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-0 Saturday night in Saskatoon, Sask. Spear and Van Huizen finished with 12 kills each and Blackburn added 12 digs as TWU took the match 30-28, 25-15 and 25-14.

“Alicia was outstanding tonight,” said TWU Head Coach Ryan Hofer. “Her 56% attack percentage as an outside hitter is phenomenal, she is having a break out year and it is exciting to see.”

The Spartans went to extra points to take the nail biting first set 30-28. The tough loss took the wind out of the Huskies as they were not close in the final two sets.

“We started out strong, but allowed Saskatchewan to comeback in the first set, but after that we played very well” said TWU Head Coach Ryan Hofer. “We met all our standards and we have gotten better each set. The girls are starting to see what they are capable when they are playing together and they are executing.”

Shannon Usher led the Huskies with 11 kills, while Tahnee Hutton added 10 digs to the Huskies cause.

Next up for the Spartans is the Canadian Women’s Masters Team on Saturday, November 4. TWU’s next Canada West match is November 10 and 11 at the University of British Columbia.

Match Notes: TWU hit at 27.6% on the night, while Saskatchewan finished at 7%...the Spartans had nine service aces to the Huskies two...TWU had seven team blocks, while Saskatchewan had four...
