#1 Herd defeat #6 Trinity Western to Open Second Half of Canada West

WINNIPEG - With both teams playing in their first conference game in over six weeks, the No. 1 ranked University of Manitoba Bisons women's volleyball team (10-1) defeated the No. 6 Trinity Western Spartans (8-3) in straight sets on Saturday afternoon at Investors Group Athletic Centre (25-21, 25-16, 25-23).

"We played good tonight but we didn't play great and against a team the calibre of Manitoba you need to play great," said TWU Head Coach Ryan Hofer. "We need to bring some extras and we need to play at a higher level. We had stretches where we played at the level that we needed to play at - we just need to play at that level for the entire match."

The first set teeter-tottered back and forth as Trinity Western held a 16-12 lead halfway through the set, attacking the net hard and forcing the Bisons into a few uncharacteristic mistakes. The Herd regained its form and used a 7-1 run to gain control of the set. The Bisons continued to control the play as they closed out the set 25-21.

In the second set the Bisons picked up where they left off in the first set, taking the first three points and never looking back. Manitoba led 8-5 at the first timeout and expanded their margin to 16-11 at the second break. The Spartans never challenged in the set as the Bisons finished the set up 25-16.

The third frame was deadlocked on five separate occasions as Trinity Western confused the Herd by diversifying their hitting and assault. The set continued to be close down the stretch with the teams tied at 21-21. Then the Bisons took the next two points to gain the critical two point margin. Manitoba played side-out from that point on to take the match 25-23.

Saralyn Stel with nine kills, four digs and two blocks, Liz Spear with seven kills and Dayna Jansen Van Doorn with four kills, eight blocks and a service ace led the Spartans, while Ashley Voth with nine kills and four blocks and Sarah Morrisette with 8 kills on the offensive side and 7 digs led the Bisons.

Manitoba will host Trinity Western tomorrow, Sunday, January 13, in the second match of the weekend series at a special start time, noon, at Investors Group Athletic Centre.
