TWU SPARTANS (3) VS THE SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY CLAN (1)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS OPEN WEST COAST CLASSIC WITH WIN OVER CLAN
LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University women’s volleyball dropped their opening set, but rallied to take the next three and earn a 3-1 victory over the Simon Fraser University Clan in the pre-season West Coast Classic tournament Friday night at the Langley Event Centre.
The Spartans dropped the first set 26-24, but rallied to outscore the Clan 75-41 to take the next three sets 25-12, 25-11and 25-18.
“We have been doing a lot of different things this week and we might have had a few jitters to start. And even though we are playing at home it is still our first game here and it took a little while for us to get comfortable,” commented TWU head coach Ryan Hofer on the team’s slow start in the opening set.
The first set was back and forth with the Clan taking the final two points to earn a 26-24 win to open the match.
In the second set the Spartans serving took over the match as the Clan were unable to pass the ball effectively. TWU led 8-5 and 16-9 at the breaks and had an eight point run to break open the set late on their way to a 25-12 win.
TWU continued their strong play in the third set. They led 8-7 at the first break and then with the Spartans leading 13-10, TWU’s fifth year outside hitter Kim Klassen (Abbotsford, B.C.) stepped to the end line. When she had finished serving the Spartans had run off 10 straight points to take a 23-10 lead on their way to taking the third set 25-11. “We need a lot from Kim, she is our fifth year player and one of our go to players,” commented Hofer on the strength of Klassen’s play. “We are going to be demanding a lot from her and she is going to have to carry the team at times.”
The Spartans closed out the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth set after leading 8-3 and 16-11.
The match took one hour and 45 minutes to play.
The Spartans will be back at it again tomorrow with two matches. TWU will take on the UBC Thunderbirds at 1 p.m. in the afternoon and the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack in the nightcap at 8 p.m. TWU opens up Canada West conference play next week at Simon Fraser.
