SPARTANS BATTLE IN LOSS TO THUNDERBIRDS

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University women’s volleyball dropped to 1-1 in the West Coast Classic Tournament with a 3-1 loss to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds Saturday afternoon at the Langley Event Centre.

The Spartans and Thunderbirds played an entertaining preseason match which saw UBC prevail 26-24, 23-25, 25-23 and 25-23.

Trinity Western looked strong in the first set. After leading 8-7 at the first technical timeout the Spartans extended their lead to 16-9 at the break. But the Thunderbirds rallied down the stretch to outscore TWU 17-8 to take the opening set 26-24.

In the second set the Spartans once again led 8-7 at the first timeout. The Thunderbirds gained the slight edge at the second break leading 16-15 as the teams played side-out ball. This time it was the Spartans turn to rally down the stretch as TWU evened the match with a 25-23 win.

In the third and fourth sets the Thunderbirds proved to be a little bit too much for the Spartans to handle. UBC led 8-5 to start each set, before building 16-12 and 16-11 leads at the breaks. In the third set the Spartans rallied, but the Thunderbirds would prevail 25-23. In the fourth UBC did not allow TWU to get close as the ended the match with the 25-18 win.

The time for the match was two hours and nine minutes.

The Spartans will be back at it again later tonight against the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack at 8 p.m. TWU opens up Canada West conference play next week at Simon Fraser.
