WOMENS VOLLEYBALL (CANADA WEST)
SATURDAY, JANUARY 9, 2010
TWU SPARTANS (3) VS THE UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA PANDAS (1)
(17-25, 25-17, 25-13, 25-16)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS CONTROL MATCH FOR FOUR SET WIN

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– The No. 6 Trinity Western University women’s volleyball team rebounded nicely from Friday’s 3-1 loss the No. 5 University of Alberta Pandas with an impressive 3-1 victory Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The Spartans won 17-25, 25-17, 25-13, 25-16 and move to 6-6, while the loss drops the Pandas to 11-3.

“Alberta really controlled us last night so for us to be better tonight we knew that there were certain things that we needed to do differently to hopefully take away their control over us and for us to start to control them,” commented TWU head coach Ryan Hofer.

With the way the first set played out it looked like it was going to be a short night for the Spartans as the Pandas dominated the opening set. Alberta led 8-1 and 16-6 before coasting to a solid 25-17 win.

Trinity Western started to right the ship to start the second set. It looked like the Pandas were going to control the set as they had the early 6-4 lead. But after the Spartans let a free ball fall in the centre of the court something appeared to change in TWU’s attitude as TWU went into the break leading 8-4. Alberta regrouped to take back the lead 14-13. But once again TWU found its edge as they took the next five points to regain control the set with an 18-14 lead.  The Spartans continued the run to take the set 25-17. The impressive streak had the Spartans outscore the Pandas 12 to three.

“There was a mentality that we had to fight and be scrappy and gritty and very, very resilient for us to play well. They are a good team and we had to learn how to really fight and dig down deep in order to get every single point. So there came a point where we said lets go and I could see it in some of the girls that they didn’t want any part of being on the losing end and they just decided to go,” added Hofer.

The Spartans continued their dominating play into the third set. After jumping out to a 7-2 lead TWU led 8-4 at the first break and 16-8 at the second before taking the set 25-13.

TWU kept the momentum in the fourth and led 8-6 and 16-10 at the two breaks before taking the set and the match 25-16.

The 25-13 set is the third highest set margin for TWU in the history of their matches with the Pandas.

Next up for the Spartans are the University of Regina Cougars. Match times on Fri. Jan. 15 and Sat. Jan. 16 at the Langley Events Centre are at 6 p.m. and 5 p.m. respectively.

The match was broadcast live on SpartanTV at gospartans.ca.

Match Notes: the 25-13, 12 point margin was only bettered by a 25-11 second set score in a 3-0 win on Jan. 7, 2006 and a 25-10 second set score in a 3-2 loss on Nov. 16, 2007.
