NO. 6 COUGARS SWEEP OPENER OVER NO. 4 SPARTANS
LANGLEY, British Columbia – The No. 4 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans lost the battle at the net tonight as they fell in straight sets 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 to the visiting No. 6 University of Regina Cougars Friday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.
The loss drops the Spartans below .500 to 6-7, while the win moves the Cougars to 7-4. Regina currently sits in fifth place in Canada West, while the Spartans sit in seventh. The top eight teams qualify for Canada West play-offs, with No. 1 getting a bye to the final four and spots two to four hosting first round a best of three series.
Outside Carmen Dyck of Creston, B.C. with 12 kills, three digs and two blocks and outside Kim Klassen of Abbotsford, B.C. with seven kills and 17 digs led the Spartans, while outside Meagan Onstad of Weyburn, Sask. with 10 kills and 12 digs and middle Beth Clark of Regina with nine kills, five digs and three blocks led the Cougars.
In the first set Regina jumped out to an 8-5 lead and were able to carry the margin to the second break, leading 16-13. The Cougars continued to control the momentum to the end of the set as they took the opener 25-21.
The second and third sets were similar through the first two breaks, TWU led 8-7 to start both sets before Regina took the momentum away and let 16-15 at the second break. In both sets the Cougars were the better team after 20 as they took the sets 25-22 and 25-21 to sweep the match 3-0.
The two teams will battle again tomorrow night in the second match of the two match series. Match time at the LEC is set for 5 p.m.
Game Notes: TWU finished with 30 kills to Regina’s 31…the Spartans had two aces to the Cougars five…Regina controlled the net out blocking TWU 10 to five…
