SPARTANS SWEEP WEEKEND OFF WOLFPACK
- TWU to host first round of play-offs

KAMLOOPS, British Columbia – Led by outside Kara Jansen Van Doorn of Langley, B.C. with 11 kills, seven digs and four aces the Trinity Western University women’s volleyball defeated the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 3-0 and in the process earned third place in Canada West and the right to host a first round play-off series. The 25-15, 25-11, 25-17 victory Saturday night at the Tournament Capital Centre moves the Spartans to 13-7, while the loss drops the WolfPack 1-19.

“I was very pleased for my girls, “said Spartans head coach Ryan Hofer. “ They came out focused. They knew that we were fighting for a host berth and we had to win in three. That was important for us. I was impressed and pleased with the way they came out.”

The Spartans came into the weekend needing the sweep to ensure the home spot. TWU got the six straight sets and as a result will now host the University of Alberta next Thur-Sat in the best of three Canada West play-offs.

Hofer is hoping that he can carry the momentum of two straight set victories over TRU into the post season. “I hope we can build on this confidence,” he said. “And take it into the next weekend. “

In addition to Jansen Van Doorn the Spartans had strong matches from libero Andrea Ball of Abbotsford, B.C. with 16 digs and setter Lauren O’Reilly of Langley, B.C. who finished with 16 set assists, while outside Anna Dyakiewicz of Burnaby, B.C. with seven kills, leftside Ashley Koehn of Surrey, B.C. with six kills, setter Lindsey Niminikin of South Slocan, B.C. with 13 assists and libero Ashley Shannik of Kamloops, B.C. with 10 digs led the WolfPack.

The first set saw Trinity Western go on a pair of 4-0 runs to lead 4-1 and then 8-2 at the first break. TWU expanded the lead to nine points, 15-6, before TRU closed to five points 15-10. The Spartans took the next point to lead 16-10 before rolling to the 25-15 opening set win.

The second set was all TWU from start to finish. The Spartans led 8-1 at the first break and 16-6 at the second. TWU kept increasing their margin before taking the second set 25-11.

The WolfPack were much stronger to start the third set as they trailed 8-6 at the first break. But TWU was able to extend their lead to seven points, 16-9, by the second break. The WolfPack closed to five points, 20-15, before the Spartans closed out the set, 25-17, and the match 3-0.

Match Notes: TWU finished at 28.4 percent attacking efficiency, while TRU finished at 3.1 percent…the Spartans outblocked the WolfPack five to one…
