The first set was pretty much all Spartans, the Canada West finalists taking it 25-14. But the second was more of a fight, both teams giving all they could to win it. With leads of 8-7 and 16-14, the Spartans gave the last push and took the set 25-19, earning them a 2-0 lead.
The Pandas bounced back in the third set. With the score tied 18-18, the Alberta players scored seven unanswered points to force the presentation of a fourth set.
In this final set, both teams fought hard, and with another 18-18 tie, the Spartans took advantage of the situation this time. At 20-20, TWU scored five points to put an end to the game.
“We are two teams that know each other very well. They know us, we know them, we know each other’s tendencies, so we had to come up with creative ways to score points,” said Spartans head coach Ryan Hofer. “My team was exhausted, especially after last night, and they just showed a lot of heart, a lot of character and a lot of fight. It’s great to end on this, I’m proud of my team.”
“It’s always tough to play the bronze medal match because I think both teams came here with a different colour of medal in mind,” commented Pandas’ coach Laurie Esiler. “Both teams showed a lot of fight today and a lot of character. We put everything we could out there.”
Kara Jansen Van Doorn was selected player of the game for the Spartans. The outside hitter combined 14 kills and 12 digs. For the Pandas, the honour went to Tiffany Proudfoot. The left side had seven points and 13 digs.
