WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL COMPLETES WEEKEND SWEEP OF WESMEN

WINNIPEG – The No. 1 Trinity Western women’s volleyball team won its ninth match in a row and 21st set in a row as it finished its two-match series against Winnipeg with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-13) victory Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre.

The Spartans haven’t lost a set since the opening frame of their 3-1 win against Regina Nov. 3.

With the win, the Spartans improve their record to 9-1. The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 2-7.

Amber Brown (Three Hills, Alta.) and Alicia Perrin (Creston, B.C.) led the Spartans with 10 kills each. Perrin also had a match-high five blocks while Kristen Moncks (Standard, Alta.) led the Spartans in digs with a match-high 13. Brown also had a career-high six aces. Her previous best was against Queen’s in last year’s CIS championship consolation semifinal on March 3.

Sarah Lynch led the Wesmen with seven kills and four blocks. Ozana Nikolic had six kills and 10 digs.

“I was very impressed with how our girls came out and played a steady match that followed the game plan,” said Spartans coach Ryan Hofer. “Whether it was our blocking or our attacking, we did a great job of executing the plan. It was a team effort and everyone was supporting each other.

“Amber Brown had an outstanding night to complete a fantastic weekend for her. She attacked well and served exceptionally well and really controlled the ball.”

After the Wesmen and Spartans opened the first set exchanging points, TWU took control in the middle stages as it opened a 15-11 lead just prior to the technical timeout.  After that, the Spartans put the set out of reach, going on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 22-11. The Spartans went on to win the set 25-14.

A pair of Trinity Western runs was the story in the second set. Winnipeg held a slim 3-2 lead early on, but another 7-0 run gave the Spartans a 9-3 advantage and, soon after, another run, this time entailing five straight points, put the Spartans ahead 14-4. Trinity Western would eventually win the set 25-17.

The Spartans opened the third set with five straight points and just kept on rolling as they closed out the match with a 25-13 win. A kill by Perrin put the finishing touches on a decidedly one-sided match.

The Spartans will travel to play UBC Okanagan next week. Winnipeg will play Brandon in a home and home series beginning Thursday night in Brandon.

Game Notes: TWU hit .338 while Winnipeg hit just .011…TWU had 9.5 blocks to Winnipeg’s 5…TWU finished with 12 aces to Winnipeg’s 4….TWU was playing without outside hitter Royal Richardson (Rocky Mountain House, Alta.)
