Game Development Team Primary Role: Software Engineer/Marketing Video

Hi, I am Kevin Vainio from Äänekoski, Finland. I am a communications major and a computer science minor. I enjoy working with computers and electronics, so working on this game will be an great opportunity to get to know more about the whole process that goes into program development. I like the outdoors and snowboarding, so it is great to be in BC where we have some of the best views and best snow in the world.

BUGS!

Thu, 07 Apr 2011 21:50:56 GMT

Bugs! There are bugs everywhere! I have spent the day fixing bugs. After getting all the features into the game I needed to change a few things to make the game play better and that seemed to opened the flood gates and filled the game with bugs. After fixing one bug it just seems like there were two more that needed to be fixed. As I said in my last blog, "I have a sneaking suspicion though that there are going to be a lot more headache to come". I was right. Debugging is very frustrating and I did not do as good of a job building the game as I originally thought. However there is light at the end of the tunnel, and I feel like I am finally starting to get to the point where I have a finished game, but we'll see what happens in the next few days with all these bugs.

Full of features

All the features are finally done for the mini-game that I am working on. It took a lot of work to get all the features and game play designs working but it is finally done and now the fun starts! The game testing! We now need to try to break the game in any and every way possible so that the things that we do break are fixed and tested again to make sure they never happen again. I have a sneaking suspicion though that there are going to be a lot more headache to come, seeing as debugging is even more frustrating then getting all the required features into the game. Well I just hope that I did a good job making the game so that there are no bugs.

Playing with physics

Fri, 25 Mar 2011 00:25:09 GMT

Physics is so applicable to everything we see. So I took on the task of creating physics in this game development project. I jumped at the chance to make my own physics and then see it at work. I started by doing a lot reseach about all the different physics engine that were suitable for this project and after finding one that I though to be great I was set with task of learning how to use it. After quite a few hours of testing, I found out that the physics engine I had chosen was not very reliable or stable. So I had to start again. I finally found a physics engine that fit our criteria, and was stable and reliable. From there I started building all the features needed for the game and after what seems like hundreds of hours and lots of help from Ian I finally have a working game that has physics in it, even though I do not think that the physics can be call realistic. I just wish that I could set my own physics like I did in the game so that I can jump super high and fly around. Even though there seems to be more headaches with trying to make real physics work in a game than I ever though possible, the rewarding feeling of gettings something to work make all the headaches worth the effort.
