Keys to Preventing Security Breaches
Here are some simple steps that you can take to reduce the chances of someone taking advantage of your information:
- Never leave your computer 'open' or data unattended. Do not leave your computers unattended without "locking" or logging out of your computer as others could access your files, or send email using your account credentials. The most complex password will not help protect your computer if you leave your computer open and unattended. (*Tip for advanced users- to quickly lock your computer, you can use the Windows+L hotkey combination on your keyboard!Note- this is only for desktops as most IBM notebooks don't have the Windows key)
- Limit laptop breaches. Laptops should never be left unattended and stored in a safe place when not in use. If you would like a security cable for your office on campus you can request one via our help desk. (Note: Users can have one cable free, but if you would like a second one for home, you must supply a GL code to purchase it).
- Protect your screen when in public. Remote workers should watch their confidential documents when in public places such as coffee shops and planes. Potential hackers can be foiled by special privacy screens or even by the simple change to a smaller font-size. If you would like a privacy screen for your notebook you can request one via our help desk (GL code required).
