Phone Guide for Resident Students

Basic Service
The basic residence telephone service includes: dial tone to the jack in your room, local calling, touch-tone service and voice mail. Students are responsible for providing their own analog telephone set. While any standard telephone is acceptable, cordless phones using the 2.4 Ghz range are not permitted as they interfere with the campus wireless network. Internet phones (VOIP) are not not supported and in most cases will not work on our network. Please see acceptable phones for more details.
The Telecommunications Policy applies to all members of the Trinity Western University community who use or access our telecommunication resources accessed from or to a university location.
Telephone Numbers
Roommates will each have their own private voice mailbox which is associated with a shared telephone number. Telephone and voice mailbox numbers are posted in each room. These numbers are assigned to the room and not to the occupants. If you move, the numbers will remain with the room.
TWU Telephone Jacks
In the residence halls, one telephone jack has been installed in each student room. Suites generally have a phone jack in each room of the suite. Each of these jacks however are on the same line allowing for residents to choose where to place their phone.
Connecting Your Telephone
- Plug your telephone into the wall socket with the single outlet. Elsewhere in your room you will see another wall socket with two outlets. These are slightly larger in size and are reserved for you and your roommates computer connections.
- Before plugging in your phone set please be sure that the ringer is set to "ON" and that the phone is set on "TONE" not "PULSE."
- If your phone has a built in answering service it must be disabled as that will interfere with the system voicemail.
Making Calls
- Dialing from room to room or to any campus phone, simply dial the four-digit extension number. All TWU extension numbers are the last four digits of the telephone number. For example, if your telephone number is (604) 882-4357, someone calling you from another TWU telephone would dial 4357.
- Dial 0 from any residence phone to access additional services. (Campus Security, the TWU helpdesk, the Housing office etc.)
- To make a local call dial 9 + area code + the telephone number. (Note that all local calls MUST include the area code)
- To call Toll Free Numbers, dial 9 + (1-800, 1-888 or 1-877) + telephone number.
- Calling Long Distance:
1. Residents using the TWU long distance plan should dial 89 + your long distance calling card number + 1 + area code + number. (this is available ONLY on campus residence phones)
2. Residents wishing to use their own calling card simply need to dial 9 followed by the instructions on their card.
Collect Calls
- Incoming collect calls are not permitted under any circumstances. To do so will result in an administration fee of $5.00 above the cost of the call.
- Effective January 2008 outgoing collect calls are no longer possible as access to the operator has been restricted. Please use your calling card for long distance calls.
Telephone Troubles
If you are having a problem with your telephone service, please keep in mind that the trouble can occur in any of a number of places: with the telephone set, the handset (receiver), the mounting or handset cords, or with the service itself. Before you call Telecom Services to report the telephone trouble, please test your telephone:
- First make sure that your telephone is connected to the TWU telephone jack and is in the proper receptacle. See the above sections: TWU Telephone Jacks and Connecting Your Telephone.
- We recommend plugging your telephone into a working telephone jack in another room to test for a problem with the line. If the telephone still does not work properly, the problem is with the telephone, cords, or handset. Consult your warranty or the store where you purchased the telephone.
- If the telephone does work properly in another room, you may have a service problem. Report the trouble to Telecom Services via the TWU helpdesk or send an e-mail to telecom@twu.ca.
- For problems with long distance calling please deal directly with the service provider by calling the customer service number provided on the calling card.
Annoyance Calls
If you receive harassing telephone calls, please notify your Residence Director at once. This first step is required in order to fully investigate any complaint. Appropriate action will then be taken (see the Telecommunications policy for additional information).
