The Hanson Centre for Spiritual Life & Leadership will be a signature building at the heart and centre of TWU—a renewed declaration and lasting symbol of the University’s Christ-centred essence and mission, past, present, and future.
A Renewed Declaration
To honour the visionary leadership and commitment that founded the University, the main feature of the Centre will be a new Calvin B. Hanson Chapel. This portion of the building will include original stones from TWU’s first chapel, which was built as a cornerstone to Trinity Junior College in 1962.
A Lasting Symbol
Located at the crossroads of daily campus life, the Centre will be a lasting symbol of TWU’s highest goal—to glorify God through all our activities as a university. It will play a major role in the daily life of the university and its commitment to educational vitality through the Christian liberal arts and sciences. Every day for decades to come, the Centre will support students, staff, faculty, alumni, and all those who visit campus in the pursuit of transformational faith. Its impact will permeate every aspect of our life together as a special, high level educational faith community.
How the Centre will be used
Choral Program, Recitals & Concerts
The Hanson Centre will be a significant venue benefitting TWU’s family of choirs, enriching the campus, and supporting this community of faith. The TWU choirs have a local, provincial, national and global ministry. The Hanson Centre and its chapel will serve as a classroom, rehearsal site, and a venue for the School of the Arts, Media and Culture’s music recitals and concerts.
Student Ministries
The Hanson Centre will provide a home base for TWU’s chapel worship arts program and small group ministries. An important part of the University’s student impact, these ministries give students the opportunity to grow strong in their personal faith as they develop as godly Christian leaders serving God locally and globally.
Spiritual Life and Leadership
Trinity Western University is a nationally recognized leader for developing spiritual life and leadership. The Hanson Centre will be a destination for local, national and international gatherings of Christian leaders for dialogue and collaboration on the matter of the Great Commission. The impact of the Centre will not be restricted to TWU’s campus, but will have a national and global impact.
The Chapel Stones Campaign
The Hanson Centre will retain the original stones from the signature wall of the original Calvin Hanson Chapel. Part of the fund raising plan for the Hanson Centre is to ‘sell’ the stones from the original Chapel wall. Each stone will be part of a new stone wall in the Hanson Centre. The name of the person who ‘buys’ it (or the name of someone else if they wish) will be included on a plaque displayed in the Centre. The stones can also be bought anonymously. The cost of one stone is $1000.
The new stone wall will be comprised of approximately 1500 original stones, plus an estimated additional 500 new stones needed to complete the wall.
