Welcome to the TWU MA TESOL Program
Knowledge Creation. The whole program is built upon the process of students researching, interacting and critically examining ideas, theories, methods and techniques in TESOL; this program is not traditional-lecture based!
Collaboration. Each course centres around a set of highly interactive research projects. Working in teams, students research and then report to the rest of the cohort on their findings.
Technology. The use of cutting-edge, web-based technology is integrated in the delivery, content, and process of both the online and resident programs.
The MA TESOL program offers two study options:
Online MA TESOL
The online TWU MA TESOL (OL) is a 36 credit, 2.5 to 3 year program that has been designed to meet the variety of needs and specializations around the world. The format is based on a unique, collaborative online instructional system.
The first summer of study, students are required to come to campus in July for a one-week orientation and a two-week intensive face-to-face session. This session prepares students for the following two years of course work. Throughout the rest of the program, students work through three-week modules that are mediated by a combination of teaching methods, which may include online discussions, reading, video, collaborative project work, and face-to-face meetings with each other and instructors.
The OL track meets the needs of those professionals seeking to further their professional development while balancing their careers and personal lives.
Resident MA TESOL
The resident TWU MA TESOL (RMT) is a 36-credit, 12-academic-month program, beginning in September, in a face-to-face collaborative learning environment.
All classes are conducted at the Langley campus and the format is basically one course per month. Typically, students are actively involved in program activities six hours per day, five days per week, with additional readings and research done outside of the class. It is a “full-time job” for 12 months and students generally live either on campus or in close proximity.
The RMT track is a good fit for Canadian or international students seeking to further their professional development through small group collaboration and focused, intensive studies.
MA TESOL Graduates:
- Are well prepared to teach and lead in multiple instructional contexts
- Possess the critical skills necessary for applying contemporary language teaching research and methods
- Demonstrate appropriate professional speaking and writing style
- Are professionally connected to the discipline of English Language Teaching
The TWU MA TESOL program is TESL Canada Level 3 certified and is an official BCTEAL institutional member.
