What Employee Benefits Are Available?

At Trinity Western we are committed to offer our employees a comprehensive benefits package. Employees in regular staff positions working a minimum of 24 hours per week are eligible for Life, Health, Dental and Disability benefits. Faculty members with sessional contracts of 5/8ths or more per year are also eligible. Qualification periods for benefits vary depending upon the individual benefits and area of service. Please contact the Human Resources Office with any questions regarding benefits or qualification periods. All benefits are mandatory/automatic unless otherwise stated. Listed below is a brief overview of each of the benefits and full descriptions may be found in the benefits booklet you receive during your benefits orientation.

Basic Life Insurance

Group life insurance is at one times annual salary with a minimum of $20,000 and maximum of $155,000 coverage. Coverage reduces by 50% at age 65.

  • Premium: 100% paid by the employee.
  • Eligibility: 1st of the month following one completed month of employment.

Dependant Life Insurance

Coverage amounts are $10,000 spousal life insurance and $4,000 for each dependant child. 

  • Premium: 100% paid by the employee.
  • Eligibility: 1st of the month following one completed month of employment.

Optional Life Insurance

Optional life insurance is not mandatory; it may be purchased for the employee and/or spouse. Coverage can be elected in increments of $10,000 up to a maximum of $500,000.  Rates are based upon the age brackets of the participants and applications for coverage are subject to the approval of the carrier. Application form and medical questionnaire are available on the HR Intranet site.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment

Coverage is in the event of accidental loss or use of a limb(s). Amount of payment is dependent upon the extent of the injury. In the case of accidental death, a payment of one times the employee's annual salary in addition to the regular Life Insurance will be made to the beneficiary. 

  • Premium: 100% paid by the University.
  • Eligibility: 1st of the month following one completed month of employment.

Optional Accidental Death & Dismemberment

Optional AD&D is not mandatory and may be purchased for the employee and their dependants. Coverage may be elected in increments of $10,000 up to a maximum of $500,000.  Rates are based upon the type of coverage elected (Single or Family). Please contact the Human Resources Office for instructions on how to apply for coverage.

Optional Critical Illness Insurance

Optional CI insurance is not mandatory and may be purchased for the employee, spouse and eligible dependent children. Coverage may be elected in increments of $5,000 (minimum of $10,00). Rates are based on age and gender. This coverage may be converted to an individual policy after termination of employment.

  • Premium: 100% paid by the employee

Long Term Disability Plan (LTD)

In the event that an employee's disability extends beyond the University's short term plan, staff members are entitled to apply for a benefit of 60% of earnings to a maximum of $5,500 monthly based on a contract provisions with the insurer.

  • Qualification: Employee must complete a 32-week waiting period. Note: the claim must be accepted by the insurer.
      • 2 weeks qualification
      • 15 weeks short-term disability
      • 15 weeks EI
  • Premium: 100% paid by the employee

Extended Health

Included in this benefit are comprehensive drug benefits, supplementary hospital benefits, supplementary health care benefits and unlimited out-of-province, out-of-country emergency benefits. Claim forms may be obtained at the Human Resources Office; however, you are encouraged to register on line at www.greatwestlife.com for a range of services and personalized claim forms. This benefit is optional if employees have alternate coverage of equal or greater value with a spousal plan. 

  • Premium: 100% paid by the University
  • Qualification: Must be on BC Medical Services Plan (MSP)

Dental Plan

Dental coverage will be provided at 80% for preventative and diagnostic treatment, 80% for basic treatment, 50% for major treatment and 50% orthodontic treatment for dependents only under age 19. Annual limitations as well as life time limitations apply to this plan. Claims may be submitted electronically by your practitioner. This benefit is optional if employees have alternate coverage of equal or greater value with a spousal plan. 

  • Premium: 100% paid by the University.

Group Retirement Savings Plan (GRSP)

Employees who are working regularly a minimum of 30 hrs/wk for staff or 6/8ths for faculty are enrolled in the Group Retirement Savings Plan. Following a qualification period of a full 3 months' employment, plan members will contribute a minimum of 4% of monthly salary and the University will match the contribution with 4%. Members may make additional contributions above the required 4% if they desire; however, the University matches a maximum of 4%. All funds are submitted to the plan carrier and the member is responsible for the investment direction from a range of mutual and interest bearing funds. All members are vested immediately upon enrolment and have the added option of establishing a spousal account. Payment of benefits from the plan varies depending on the leaving circumstances (resignation, retirement or death) and will be discussed fully prior to the funds being released. Members understand the fact that the amount of funds available upon leaving the University depends on the performance of the mutual and interest bearing funds chosen by their member for investment. Continued membership after termination is not optional.
