Locating Dissertations and Theses

This page lists a number of possible sites for locating and ordering doctoral dissertations and master's theses. Because theses and dissertations are distributed in a number of ways (when they're available at all), you may not be able to obtain the thesis you want in the format you prefer. Occasionally, you will find the thesis you want full text online for free. However, in most cases you'll have to order it through interlibrary loan or purchase it from ProQuest. Interlibrary loan can be time consuming.

TWU Theses can be found by searching the library catalogue.

Searching by Author's Name

  • Go to the library homepage TWU Library Homepage
  • From the Books & Media (Catalogue) dropdown, choose Author Name (any order)
  • Type the author's given name and last name. Do not search using the author's first initial and last name as this produces inconsistent results.
  • Click Go. This should take you directly to the catalogue record of the thesis.
  • If this produces no hits, check your spelling or try an Author Name (Last name) search. This will produce a list of similar author names in alphabetical order, allowing you to browse for the correct name.

Searching by Title

  • Go to the library homepage TWU Library Homepage
  • From the Books & Media (Catalogue) dropdown, choose Title (starts with)
  • Type the first few words of the title and click Go.
  • This will produce the title in an alphabetical list of documents with similar titles.

Searching by Keyword

  • If you are not sure of the title or author of a thesis, it is possible to search by keyword and limit it to theses.
  • Go to the library homepage TWU Library Homepage
  • From the Books & Media (Catalogue) dropdown, choose Keyword, enter your search terms and click Go.
  • When you get your list of results, choose Limit by --> Thesis from the "Limit by" list to the right, and press the green arrow to apply the limits.
  • Because the limited number of theses, this may produce no results.

All TWU Theses listed in the catalogue are available on the Main Level of the library. They are library-use only.

Counselling Psychology MA Thesis Online Repository

D. Min. Dissertations (TWU)

Theses Canada (http://collectionscanada.ca/thesescanada/) maintains a database of Canadian theses. It provides ways of:

  • Locating Theses
  • Accessing Electronic Theses (some of which are available full-text online)
  • Borrowing Theses (through interlibrary loan)
  • Purchasing Theses (through ProQuest)

CARL Metadata Harvester

Searching for Theses in CARL

  • Search results are best if you know the title of the thesis or dissertation and the name of the author.
  • The number of theses and dissertations in the repository is relatively small, so use broad subject terms for initial searches.
  • Be sure to include (thesis OR dissertation) in your search to limit your results to that type of document.
  • Generally, the documents in the linked repositories are available full text.

Other Theses

Dissertation Express

  • The Dissertation Express page explains how to search ProQuest for dissertations from 1977 to the present.

PQDT Open (Open Access dissertations)

  • PQDT Open http://www.bellhowell.infolearning.com/en-US/products/dissertations/pqdt.shtml is a list of Open Access dissertations provided by ProQuest.
  • It is not searchable from within ProQuest.
  • The easiest way to search it is to go the link above and do a text find (Ctrl+f Windows; Command + f Mac) from within your browser.
  • You can search for key terms or author names.
  • The PQDT Open dissertations are also searchable by search engine.
  • For best results do a title search with the title in quotation marks, and with the author's name outside the quotation marks. E.g. "Scandium oxide thin films and their optical properties in the extreme ultraviolet" Acosta

PhdData

Commercially Published Theses or Dissertations

  • Dissertations are sometimes published commercially (and often with a different title). Check the TWU Catalogue or WorldCat, and search by author name.

Discipline-related Databases

  • Some theses and dissertations may not be available through any of the means above, but the authors may have published journal articles based on their research. Searching a specialized database (Article Databases) for the author's name and adding keywords related to the topic of his/her research, may find articles they have published. In addition, some databases, MLA, Bibliography, PsycInfo, etc. index theses and dissertations.
