Using Mac Browsers to View PDF Files

Some Mac users have reported a black screen when attempting to view PDFs using the Safari browser. The apparent cause is a conflict between Safari and the Adobe PDFViewer plug-in.

Removing the Plug-ins

  • First close Safari and any other browswer you might have open.
  • Open up Finder and click on your hard drive (named Macintosh HD by default)
  • Then click on Library and then Internet Plug-ins
  • There you should find AdobePDFView.plugin or possibly PDF Browser Plugin.plugin
  • Delete the plugin(s) or If you feel you might still need them, drag them out of the Internet Plug-Ins folder
  • Now when you click on a link to a PDF file, it will open up in the browser window.

TESOL Quarterly - Digital Volumes 1 - 41 (1967 - 2007)

The full text PDFs of the back issues of TESOL Quarterly are on the library website. Neither Safari nor Firefox work reliably for opening these pages, particularly the imbeded links.

If you are having trouble viewing the PDF files, download one of the following browsers, both of which work reliably:

Camino (15.8 MB)

OmniWeb (25.3 MB)
