The Financial Aid Office has created a specific account for this program. These monies will be treated as an award and not employment. The Financial Aid Office will have any NSERC money and TWU money put into this account and transferred into the students account as an award in one lump sum pay. The Director of Financial Aid will look at the criteria and requirements of the award to ensure this complies.
Both Undergraduate and Graduate students who are to be employed into designated “research” positions on the basis of their scholarship (differs from regular student employment on campus in that the professor decides who is the right person to be his/her research assistant – usually a 4th year or graduated student working on a Master’s program);
Both will receive and sign an employment letter which states that they are in a research position (the nature of this employment is that it is between the professor, holder of the SSHRC and NSRC grant funds, and the student NOT, TWU and the student) and that payments are for scholarship. All research assistants will also sign a standard “confidentially agreement” to protect the professors research information;
NOTE – As this is not TWU employment, there is no requirement for Graduate Research Assistant (students) to sign the university’s membership and faith statements. However, these should be shown to them to ensure that the individual will know and fully understand the nature of the campus and be respectful toward the statements expectations while on campus. Undergraduate students sign the membership statement as normal to be enrolled at TWU.
As Financial Awards has the responsibility for all scholarship fund awards on campus, all original letters and agreements will be sent to them along with the GL information to which the payments are to be charged and account information for the student.
Financial Awards will issue the payments. A T4A will be issued to the student for tax purposes at the end of each calendar year. Students will be advised to make provision for income tax, EI and CPP in their letters.
