Copyright Agreements

The following copyright agreements rule TWU's use of worship music.  Sorry about the boring legal nature of all this, but it is essential to comply with these agreements.

Most modern songs and many hymns are covered by this copyright agreement.  A complete list of publishers can be found at the CCLI site.  This agreement allows for:

  • Copying of music, lead sheets etc. for use by a worship team
  • Copying of lyrics for booklets, overheads or lyrics slides for use by congregations.
  • BUT NOT: copying of music for performance by choirs or ensembles; personal use; recordings for sale or public distribution.

This license covers hymns found in collections published by GIA Music (e.g. Iona, Taize), as well as the other publishers listed on the OneLicense site.  This agreement allows for:

  • Copying of music in the form of lead sheets, lyrics, bulletin inserts, programs, song sheets, song books, transparency or lyric projection.
  • BUT NOT: copying for choir parts, accompaniments, instrumental parts, and no choral music may be produced.  Not for personal use.

"Public Domain"

Hymns or hymn arrangements that are not labeled with copyright information (generally those written over 100 years ago) are designated "public domain" and may be copied without penalty.  However, a public domain hymn that has a new, copyrighted arrangement, cannot be copied in that form without permission from the publisher (or the copyright distributor).

Other than CCLI/OneLicense/Public Domain

If you want to copy or use a song that is clearly copyrighted, but is not covered by CCLI or OneLicence, you must obtain permission directly from the songwriter and/or publisher.
