Meet the Staff

Director of Student Ministries
Rob Rhea (email)

Robby loves God, Sue (his darling wife), Nathan and Hannah (his darling kids) and likes learning, fishing and eating B-B-Q ribs. Robby's reason for working in student ministry is a result of the life changing experiences that he had as a student and has observed in the lives of other students. He sees the years that a person is at university as pivotal in that persons spiritual, emotional and physical growth with the sky as the limit. He believes it is his life calling to see the truth of Gods word and the influence of the Holy Spirit bring transformation in all areas of the lives of university students. As they are transformed to be like Christ they will undoubtedly change the world for Him.

TM headshot web Associate Director for Chapel Programs
Tim McCarthy (email)

Tim is madly in love with Cyndi, his wife of twelve years; together they're enjoying their Fabulous Five kids - Liam, Carissa, Kiara, Aidan and Ashlyn. A TWU and ACTS alumnus, he has been coordinating TWU's chapel program since 1997. Tim enjoys good music of every kind, thought-provoking theatre, movies, and literature, and spending time with his family. Tim seeks to live by this vision: "God has created me to display His glory, as I treasure Him above all, trusting Him to save and lead me, and by His enabling, teaching others to do the same." The opportunity to disciple students through worship and worship leadership is one of the ways he's seeking to fulfill this call. He believes that if our corporate worship faithfully reflects Gods majesty, love and power, we are more fully equipped to "Love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind and strength," and to "Love our neighbor as ourselves."

Tim has a blog about worship at TWU here. He has also done some graduate work in the area of worship and the academy, which you can read here.

Sarah Julien

Student Ministries Intern

Sarah Julien (email)

A recent graduate of the International Studies program at TWU, Sarah is excited to experience life outside of school! Born and raised in Summerland, BC, Sarah loves being outside, hiking and fishing, reading, singing, and dancing. She is a huge fan of travelling and adventures and believes every day should include at least one cup of coffee, chats with friends and fun!

Sarah is fascinated by other cultures, politics and history and how these affect poverty and international aid. During her semester at the Laurentian Leadership Centre (LLC), she interned with the Secretary of State for Multiculturalism and Canadian Identity.

Sarah is excited to work in Student Ministries and is passionate about seeing God work in peoples’ lives. Throughout her four years at Trinity, God worked in her life in amazing ways. Ask her about it! Going on two, month-long mission trips to a rural village in Dominican Republic has shaped her as a person and she is eager to help students engage in similar activities.

Coordinator of Global Projects
Kara Bergstrom (email)

Right after Kara graduated from Trinity with a B.A. in Psych, she flew to Mexico City. For one year she lived with a host family, learned Spanish, and did social work. Being lonely and seeing extreme poverty made it the hardest year of her life. But she fell in love with the culture... the food, music, dancing, and chili peppers! And she had become an advocate for people in need. She changed so drastically that she wanted others to have this opportunity. She began mentoring and preparing university students for missions throughout Latin America, Africa and Asia.

Later, she raised funds for Christian charities and served as a worship leader and elder at her multi-cultural church. Wanting a change, she decided to get her Masters degree in Cross-Cultural Ministry at TWU, where she met Kent! Walking down the grass aisle in bare feet, they got married in September 2005. Kara and Kent love BC for the hiking, camping, and mountain biking. In December, they’re gonna have their first baby! Watching God answer Kara’s prayers in amazing ways makes her think: “Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.” (Psalm 73:25)

Coordinator of Discipleship and Group Ministries Dyan Pauls (email)

Dyan has returned to TWU after living in Fresno California for the past 6 years. She graduated with a psychology degree from TWU in 2001 and then worked in Student Life ('01-'02) as an intern before attending Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary.

Dyan received her Master's of Marriage, Family and Child Counseling degree at M.B.B.S. in 2004. With her degree, she had the opportunity to work for a non-profit organization providing professional counseling services to children and their families within a school context. She enjoyed mentoring and leading bible studies at her church and being involved in church leadership.

Dyan has a passion to work with college-aged students because she views these years as pivotal in forming their personal and spiritual identity. She remembers her own time at TWU and the growth she experienced, so her desire is to encourage and challenge others to fulfill their God given potential and feels blessed to have the opportunity to witness God at work in these student's lives.

Dyan's hobbies are: cycling, hiking, beachcombing and taking in a great movie. She loves being an aunt to her nephew and nieces. Having lived in sunny California for several years, she is going to have to get used to the rain again and find her Vitamin D in other ways.

Coordinator of Outreach and Evangelism

Chett Fitchett (email)

Chett is a familiar face at TWU, having graduated in December 2008. Combining his passion for Christ, the Church, and the students of TWU, he’s amped to share in the impact TWU is making on our community and the world.

Chett began his life as a married man on August 22, 2009. In his hometown of Vernon, B.C. Chett married Katherine, a woman he defends as being “the most beautiful girl in the whole-wide-world, inside and out!”

Chett combines humor and creativity with a serious commitment to love God and neighbor. These come together in a desire to harness the vibrant passion of students who are seeking to change the world with Christ’s love and compassion. Chett believes that the Word of God is living and active, and he loves the challenge extended by those who are not ashamed of the Gospel—who dare to be disciples of the King.

You may overhear Chett talking about theology and the interaction between Christianity and culture, but you’ll also find him walking around in nature (being distracted by little bugs), inventing some new wacky game or caring for his fish.

Mentoring and Christian Resources

Betty Lau (email)

Betty loves God, people, life, laughter, food… well, there’s a lot to love! If she’s not laughing with people, you’ll usually find her reading a book. Her initial thirst to see people’s lives changed was a result of her own encounter with Jesus in Malaysia. Betty’s desire to explore the world gained momentum on a high school campus in Toronto. Later, she found herself at a crossroads when a group of God-fearing students caught her attention with the vision to help change the world at the University of Western Ontario where she graduated.

Betty embraced God‘s call to make disciples of all nations. This can be seen in her passion to cross cultures and point people to Christ – especially students! She believes students are the leaders of tomorrow. She has traveled to over 20 countries with Power to Change, mobilizing leaders to influence others. Betty is always seeking ways to connect people with what God has called them to. Currently, she works in that role at Power to Change and TWU.
